All the grease has probably gone.

Do it properly or do it twice?

If you don't have the luxury of a hoist I'd really recommend the slide a boot kit (not the short lived sticky boot!). For a tenner or thereabouts the longest part of the job will be straining to get the hub nut off.

Maybe an even harder part to tighten the hub nut up to the correct torque. How many average DIY torque wrenches do you see that will tighten to 260ft/lbs ?

If your handy with the spanners, you'll recognise the bearing on a fwd and the correct torque setting is FT.

Doubtful you will need a huge bar to get 260ft/lbs.

Most diy torque wrenches only go upto 160. It will break long before you get to 260.

  • get a proper boot kit, not these glue ones or when it comes to your mot, you may need it doing again
  • the correct boot kit i.e a replacement boot doesnt cost all that much some were even cheaper than universal ones.

I've used the stretch ones three times now (on 2 cars). Soak them for 10 minutes in water that has just been boiled before trying to fit then they stretch more easily but still difficult to get over the cone; a 2 person job really as you get all greasy really quickly from the cone lube. All are giving good service so far - about 2 -3 years and counting.
