  • The RAO can make an emergency advance of pay but it depends on the circumstances and is fairly rare.

There are two publications that may cover this.

    JSP752 - Allowances & JSP 754 - Pay & Charges.

It is unclear if you want an advance of pay, or payment ahead if you were short for the month.

  • If there has been a mistake with the soldiers pay, then yes they could ask for an advance. If it's just because of overspending then no, it would not look good for them to be seen as not managing their wages.

I am an ex Pay Sgt and have seen this crop up often, it really does depend on the circumstances i.e changing from a cash paid soldier to banking or an administrative error by the Pay Office or Glasgow are the most common cases.

On certain postings you can ask for an advance of pay. Usually where your posted overseas (or returning from an overseas post)
Proud to have dealt with our debts

    Current debt ZERO.

  • Only in exceptional circumstances will an advance be given on the grounds of a posting order, i.e not able to access UK funds/delay in change of banking details by admin system, for instance. Disturbance allowance can be claimed by Army personnel to off set the cost of moving, although I know the RAF have a different posting system but no advance of pay usually, except for travel to hand quarter over. There is no need to rely on arrival of personal documentation to add personnel to a units computer system, they are now sent electronically, so no need to chase banking info.

For example, I left the Army for a year on PVR, was living still in Germany with my husband and chose to re-enlist. I was posted to a German unit with a posting order and had to organize my son's child care, I asked about an advance on posting due to paying bill in advance but my boss, the RAOWO was not to impressed with the idea of giving one out. So no, they are not keen on advances of pay on posting although they do happen and if I had kicked up a fuss I probably would have got one but it wouldn't have looked very good, and I was newly posted, newly enlisted Pay Cpl at the time.

It does sound like OP was asking in view of lack of cash, rather than a pay problem which would be dealt with by the pay administrators. If there are money worries, the soldier should try to deal with it through a free charity or CAB, unless overseas. If debt is a serious problem then I would recommend going to speak to the RAO and Pay Clerk, (normally Cpl or above) at Sqn level, for some advice and guidance.

    Pete is correct.

You can get an advance of one months net pay if assigned to or from an overseas assignment in excess of 60 days.
  • I never said he was wrong, I just stated that it is not an expected entitlement as is not the norm to be given an advance on each overseas posting and in the OP case, I don't believe that this is the case.

Most units will not entertain given an advance on posting to a banking soldier who has means of accessing money from their UK bank abroad.

Like I said exceptional circumstances only. Units RAO's do not look favourable on given advances to bank paid soldiers, if the pay problem has not been caused by an administrative error. An advance in the case of Cyprus is a classic example of an exceptional circumstance.

To repeat though, I never said you could not take an advance.

No it's not exceptional circumstances only. JSP 754 states that any one going to or returning from an overseas assignment in excess of 60 days is entitled and I would have no problem authorising it if asked regardless of personal circumstances.

Actually Exarmy, I think you are getting confused between an Advance of Pay and an EPIC.

EPIC's are only paid in certain exceptional circumstances.
