HELP: Booking with Expedia - They've made a mistake and 'I'm liable'

I dont think you would have an under occupancy fee as most hotels in USA are sold on the basis of 2 people per room even when 2 double beds and then extra person charges apply (if you tell them, rather than just sneaking in)

Not sure where you go though if expedia wash their hands

how about contacting the hotel yourself and asking them about whether it will cost more to have 4 in your room compared with the 2 you have paid for and have written confirmation for?

Get something in writing from the hotel if they say you can have your party of 4 in the room when you check in.

I already did this, it is in OP.
I emailed the hotel last week just to make sure that everything was all above board.

They confirmed that the room upgrade had been received but that only two occupants would be staying in the room (not the 4 that I had upgraded for) and they would require $518 for the trip to let my friends stay in the room (despite it being a four occupancy)

as an update, it is still unresolved, they are calling me back tomorrow at 6PM with a 'resolution'.

I believe it is a room for "maximum 4 occupancy" not a room for "4 occupancy". The difference being the hotel will be sold on a per room rate basis, on 2 share. The hotel will typically charge more if a 3rd or 4th adult occupies the room as well. Children under 18 typically free. The extra adult charge the hotel makes typically will be USD20-USD35 plus tax per extra person per night.

If that was me, I'd ring the hotel anonymously and see if 4 people can physically fit in the room. Then the 2 original guests check in, then just get your friends to come up to the room.
A bit risky if you are staying for a few days. I've stayed in a 'family room' with Travelodge which is 2 adults and 2 kids and 4 of us girls have stayed in there and gone out in town that night and nobody has said anything!
Depends if you have the balls to do it though! I'd rather get there and have an argument than give them $500 before I get there!

And while you're there, if nobody's looking, you can grab whatever you need to pay for dinner from the cash register at the reception desk. That way you save even more.

Yeah I sneaked my sister into my room before. But we were there for a week & she just came for 2 nights so it was a bit easier.

My two friends once asked a hotel if they could have another two girls in with them and they didn't mind. But I think it's one of those things that's completely dependant on the hotel and even mood of the person you're asking!

Not quite the same and in the US people do it all the time as there are usually 2 doubles....rightly or wrongly

Of course it's the same. I've got no problem with it but it's still the same thing.
