Sorry I thought you may be a business when you were talking re vat.
Do not worry what the buyer has to pay, that is for them to worry about.
You need to send the parcel, with insurance and tracking if you want to have seller protection (see the postage sticky) but most of all you must ensure it has the correct customs labels. CN22 or CN23 if using Royal Mail, but if you use a courier, then they will give you the correct documentation.
US customs are tight at the best of times, so ensure you use a proper description. After recent events there, you really need to leave no doubt what is in the parcel.
It isn't scary, it just needs a bit of attention.0
