Are restaurants covered for handbag theft while having dinner?

I had my handbag stolen from a Nando's restaurant in Reading on Monday night. Unfortunately my home insurance doesnot cover the theft since it wasnt stolen from inside the home, and the gleefully informed me that i dont have personal cover. Great! As it happens both sets of house keys were in my bag so we had to get the locks changed on our new house, which I cannot claim for either.

I was wondering if Nando's may have insurance to cover the cost of someones bag being stolen from inside their premises? I know they had CCTV as the manager pointed it out to me... Does anyone out there know if I may be able to claim via the restaurant?

Nope. They're not responsible for your belongings.

  • Thanks for the reply, oh well... worth a shot I guess! Though I really do think restaurants should do alot more in terms of training their staff to spot a potential pick pocket... the lady who stole my bag was sat on her own, directly behind me and said she was 'just meeting a friend' when the waitress came to hand over a menu. The manager of the restaurant even admitted that this had happened a few times recently!!! My bag was tucked safely between my feet under the table, but I guess an opportunist is just that...

In order for a claim to succeed, you would have to demonstrate that the management were in some way to blame through carelessness or recklessness.

The person to blame is really the thief.

I think it's unlikely you could successfully claim against the restaurant.

That's unusual, and worth double checking. Who's the insurer?
