Doing my 1st ever big shop for an OS wannabee household!

Afternoon everyone!!
Well, my story is that my OH and I have just bought a house together :j We used to share a kitchen with loads of others, so I never fully embraced OS cooking (I know, I know, its no excuse!)
Now the time has come for me to do my first ever proper 'big shop', to stock up on all the OS basics that will come in handy for making my store cupboards meals, and I have a very limited idea of where to start! I know I need to have things like tinned tomatoes, stock cubes etc, but there my knowledge ends. Thanks to all you wonderful OS'ers, I have my cleaning materials list ready any raring to go, just need to add the store cupboard basics to it now!!
Any ideas where I can start? Many many thanks xx

Oh how exciting :j
Well here's my list (and don't worry it dosn't take too long to learn all this if you carry on reading on here :rotfl: )
I use Zoflora disinfectant - this can be bought in Wilkinsons and I image supermarkets. Its a very very concentrated disinfactant which costs about
50p for a small bottle. - Sounds expensive I know, but hang on.....
I mix 1 part to 40 (as per instructions) into an old dettox bottle (no need to waste money on that, like I used too), or buy a spray bottle. See the area in supermarkets where they sell buckets etc.
Use this for spraying work tops.
Sweeping brush and mop if applicable, depending on your floorsI have a Smart Price sweeping brush (Asda) but don’t scrimp money on a mop, no need to buy the most expensive but not the cheapest either, false economy.
Microfibre clothes for dusters and washing up, these a saying on here, pink for sink and blue for loo, so as you remember. :rotfl:
Don’t use fabric softener though as this distroys them, I never do anyway, I can’t tell the difference.
Some peeps use vinegar, don’t worry you don’t smell like the chippie. I used that for a while, but still couldn’t tell any difference.
Which leads me onto washing powder, I mix up a batch, the idea being that you balk out the expensive stuff thus making it go further. Persil mixed with Smart Price Value mixed with soda crystals. Works fine and the OH is a mechanic, think oily overalls.
Store cupboard.
For Cakes
Self Raisings Flour and Plain Flour
Caster Sugar
Eggs
Margaine suitable for baking, but don’t use flora – it doesn’t work.
Other peeps will help with meals with mince, I never use that so can’t help.
Hope some of this lot helps.0 -
Hi - you can't do much better than joining the OS Daily Thread - there are loads of us there who just can't stop OSing! Lots of info, recipes and other hints and tips and a lovely chat all rolled into one thread! Also, I have just noticed a 'Creating an OS Household' thread which also has lots of info! Good luck.KNIT YOUR SQUARE TOTALS:

Hi atypicalblonde,
Congratulations on your new Home! :j You sound so excited!
Don't try and do it all at once but try building up your store cupboard by buying a couple of extra items each week. Have a look at these older threads for some ideas on what others have as their Old Style basics:

How about making a plan of what you plan to cook next week and buy the ingrediants for that, and then do that each week until you've built up the cupboard without really trying? A lot of things won't be used up in one week - things like spices, gravy, flour and the like. I think that's what I did (many years ago) when I was first cooking. Don't forget to include not only main meals but realistic snacks/treats - whether you intend to make them or buy them. You'll soon find that you've built up essentials this way.0
