And if you don't have photo ID, then they have to accept alternatives. We don't have a compulsory photo ID system in the UK yet. So no company can insist that you need one.
A company can refuse to deal with anyone on any grounds they wish (as long as not under prescribed descrimination rules). So not having their required level of ID is perfectly allowable.

It wouldn't be allowable in the OP's case, as they didn't require it previously.

Is it worth the bother and the risk of annoying the company you work for though? A passport doesn't contain any useful 3rd party info to speak of.

The request for ID is almost certainly part of KYC (know your customer) and AML (Anti Money Laundering) regulations.

These are a very common thing for financial companies across the EU and beyond.

Unfortunately without more understanding of the specific circumstance and company I can't offer much more insight.

I would certainly want an account to be set up for the company and not me personally.

I would assume that for the OP to be a user of the company bank/foreign exchange account, with access to transferring money, they need proof of identity in the form of a passport. It is common place to request a copy of passport for anyone who has access to a bank/money account. It is all down to fraund prevention and money laundering. The account providers are just protecting themselves.

Just a suggestion but tell your employer that you have been in touch with your ID protection insurance and that they want the request & reason for the request to be put in writing so that you can forward it to them. Not strictly the truth but may help to protect you especially if passwords are company passwords & not personal passwords

The whole of the banking industry relies on people gambling on behalf of their employer!
