Vodafone Contract

My contract with Vodafone ends on 25th May 2013 or at least my account says I'm due for an update.
I'm not very happy with the reception coverage I get with Vodafone and want to have a look at another supplier. What happens on the 25th May if I don't renew ? Does my phone suddenly stop working ?
Do I have to return the phone ?
Can I get my HTC Wildfire S unlocked from Vodafone to suit another supplier and what happens to all my contacts / settings if I decide to use another supplier ?
Sorry for sounding so dense but any help would be appreciated
Thanks

It's the minimum term that ends.
The contract goes on indefinitely with 30-day notice required to cancel it.

No and No. The phone was yours from the day one.

The contacts remain in the phone (some might have been saved to the sim card, you can move them to the phone).
Some settings will need changing if you switch provider. Usually this can be done automatically.

If you're signed in to a Google account with your phone your contacts should have been backed up to your Google account and you'll be able to move them to any other Android phone in future just by logging in :)
