Wife wants a new auto car....

Small five-door hatch. Currently has a Jazz and would have another but a bit pricey. She wants new even though it is a waste of money blah.... blah. Can get just under £2,000 off with drivethedeal.

Looked at the Micra. A bit dull and unrefined. Salesman seemed a bit desperate so I guess they are not selling very well. I am a big fan of the mark 2 (rounded) ones -- brilliantly reliable -- but the new one doesn't seem to have moved on much (although bigger). Like the CVT gearbox on the Jazz, which is why we looked at the Micra.

Going to look at the Picanto next week. These seem much improved on the old model. Any opinions welcome...

Any reasonable alternatives for a 5-door auto? The Fiesta seems expensive and obviously would go for the Jazz again if a similar price. Not keen on Citroens.

I had my V50 in for a recall yesterday and was given a loan car.

62 ate Fiesta Auto with the 1.4 petrol engine and the older 4 speed autobox.

I was a to surprised at how well it drove

In my mostly A road and some town use it was giving 37mpg, I reset it to see what it was like on fuel as the Fiesta is on the short list for the Clio replacement.

This was a pre facelift Fiesta, and though it looks nicer than the latest Fiesta the new one is going to have a 6 speed Powershift gearbox which promises to give manual like mpg aNd emissions.

Have a look at a new Fiesta.

But don't forget the new Clio has just come out and that is also getting a double clutch gearbox.

Unless OP is unaware a Powershift is like the VAG DSG box.

A manual box with two electronically controlled clutches so you get manual economy but automatic gear shifts, with the choice to select each gear with a stick or paddles.

    Corsa is getting old now.

I can't get excited about the latest Korean offerings though they are certain to be very good.

I would go for the latest Fiesta in your position though.

    Forgot to say.

Don't even consider paying full price for a Ford.

Check mags like What Car for a guide on how much to haggle off.

But I would want near to £1500 off list on a Fiesta.

You really should drive one though.

The Jazz is a nice little car, a friend has a 61 plate that he bought used and he really rates it, though as you have pointed out the CVT box isn't the best.

The Fiesta drives like a much bigger car.

Felt like a mk1 Focus sized car to be honest.

Did 80 miles in it yesterday.

The stereo was also rather good for a small city car. USB and Aux input aswell as voice recognition and Bluetooth handsfree.

That was only a Zetec spec not a Titanium or Titanium X.

The engine in the new auto is not the old 1.4 and the gearbox will be much improved, I am going to try and find a new one that is on a demo fleet and give it a try.

I would expect the new one to be much better on fuel, though I wasn't really on an economy run, careful use could get it above 40mpg I am certain.

Though to replace the Clio I would be happy with a three yr old Ex Motability Fiesta with under 20k for £5-6k depending on if I buy at CarGiant or an Auction.

Have you tried the Skoda Citigo? (same as VW Up and Seat Mii), winning lots of award for best small car, but it is a bit smaller than the Jazz so may be too small

Also have a look at the Suzuki swift. I have just got a new manual swift and love it. A very nice drive.

We have an i20, but manual. Plenty of room, lots of standard kit and at a year old they are excellent value.

My mum is about to buy a new automatic 1.4 Honda Jass. This is to replace a 2 year old auto 1.4 which she likes but has got it into her head that she needs a new one now. She wants a parking sensor fitted and I think the salesman got her.

I'm live 100 miles away so can't help and have told her to haggle but at over 80 she is reluctant. Is there somewhere to look (net or mag) to give me an idea what she could expect to haggle off the price?

I'll direct her to have a look at all the ideas on this page and suggest she has a test drive. Has anyone any experience of the Honda Hybrid - I told to to look at those?

I'll make a new thread if you tell me to, thanks

aims for 2014 - grow more fruit and veg, declutter
  • Have you looked at the Fiat Panda ? Probably about ten grand after discount

WhatCar magazine lists all new cars and list prices at the back and also gives the lower prices that should be achievable at the dealers. if you don't like to haggle, contact drivethedeal (they are a broker) and they will quote you on a new main dealer sourced vehicle.
