Unable to use laptop by wifi

Have you got Internet connection when your laptop is connected to the router with cable?

yes i am listening basil and i am very grateful for your help, but i am not to quick on computers so am doing things one thing at a time, i tried earlier a few times to change the channel before you were good enough to try and help but the page kept going off line,i cant report back to you until i get some progress.
the problem i have been having with belkin channel changes were also there when i had the laptop connected by cable.
right so i managed to change from channel 6 to channel 11 and still had same problem i have now changed it to auto and so far it is working.
i went onto the site on my phone to download app but i have an i phone 5 and it said android
my router name and password are not underneath the router but i know what they are.
apologies if i asked a question that has recently been asked, i did go back a few pages to see if i could see a similar question, but recently changed my phone and havnt quite got used to it yet so what with trying to fix laptop and working phone out i wasnt doing to well

Ok then see how you're getting on with it and hopefully it stays like that.. But just to add to what basil said.. Maybe channel 11 was congested as well.. It is a good practice to turn off security before making changes to the channel and also to try each channel until you find the one that works.. Also in control panel in network connections you can disable all devices apart from the wireless belkin device.. just in case you have a few devices on and they're interrupting..

But I hope you won't have any problems with it anymore..

it is still on auto and working at the minute.
i did turn off kaspersky but still had a problem trying to save the changes i made to the channel, it kept going off line.
if it goes wrong again i will try changing channels.
can i ask if i find a channel that is less congested it doesnt mean it will always be that way during the day or night?
so is there any pitfalls to it being set at auto?

I'm sorry, my bad - when I mentioned turning off security I meant on the router, which is done by going to 192.168.2.1 then Security and disabling it. After that try changing the channel, save it and see if it works. If it doesn't, try another one. Then don't forget to enable security back. The auto option is ok, however it may not always pick the right one as from my experience it may pick a channel that is still congested so its best to set it manually..

thanks. anyway all working fine for now, i downloaded inssider, it appears only one other on channel 6. where there are 4 on channel 1 this is what i am on for now.
but its all working so thanks all that helped
