You coul see if there is a registered run england group near you, visit https://www.runengland.org
these are groups that are lead by qualified leaders and are aimed at beginners, usually have some kind of a social element. If there isnt a club near you then why not do the training to be a leader and start a group, encourage other people in a similar position to take up running?0 -

I know this thread is quite old now but just to say that I injured my heel running shortly before Christmas. Don't know what was actually wrong with it, doctor couldn't say but referred me to a podiatrist, but all was better by the time my appointment came around so I cancelled it.
Doctor did however advise me to try to change the way I run. Apparently heel striking (former running method) puts pressure on the heel and bones, whereas midfoot striking (current running method) puts pressure on the muscles, which can obviously take more and heal faster.
Been running like that for a few months and no hint of injury. Ran a 10k last Sunday with no problems. What will your verse be?

Take care with running. I took it up at age 50,got drawn into marathons and now at age 77 full of aches and pains. What I should have done was try shorter distances first, then maybe flexibles after that.
No way are long distances natural.
Read 'Born To Run' by Christopher McDougall, you'll find quite the opposite, long distances and very long distances are natural, that is why homosapien man survived and cro-magnon man became extinct.0 -
^^...
Running Heel - Toe - Heel...means that your potentially running at 8mph, then when your heel hits, your now braking to 0mph, then pushing off to 8mph.
I watched a video on YouTube (Chi Running) and its about getting on the front of your foot, it makes sense....I think I tend to heel strike when I extend my strike to make up for a slow pace, however shorter strides mean im on the toes, or especially when going up hill.
My physio says that you should be able to stand on a step, and lower your heel, then raise your heel to the top and back down... 20-30 times for a runner..as that gives you good calf control. I often find that my calves are pumped right up after this exercise.
Also...I am supposed to single leg press your own body weight on one leg, im 72kg and currently up to 35kg... so you can see where this is going...0 -

I never did take it up to marathons mainly because once I got over 10 miles I found I was injured for about 3 months every year. During one of these injury spells I cycled to keep myself fit, and one day I timed myself on a route and that was it, I then had a time to compete against and cycling became part of my fitness regime. I found that I was avoiding injuries, presumably because cycling was impact free. Recently I have just started swimming so my plan is to run, cycle and swim, each about twice a week.
I do prefer running, but I find dropping down to twice a week supplemented by cycling and swimming is much better.Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one birdThe only time Chuck Norris was wrong was when he thought he had made a mistakeChuck Norris puts the "laughter" in "manslaughter".I've started running again, after several injuries had forced me to stop0 -
That;s what I did eventually, cycle touring.
Read somewhere about twitch muscles, some peeps are made for marathons and some for the 100 yard dash. I got it the wrong way round lol (not).
London Marathon on BBC one now... first 4 miles at sub 4.50 pace.0 -
I can run both heel strike and forefoot strike. It is possible for me to have one foot doing heel and the other doing forefoot strike too.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked
