Hi, im gonna be renting a garage which is half a mile from my house, to store my car whilst i do it up.
It's not taxed or insured because i don't want it to be yet. I want to store it, do it up, and then tax and insure it when i can factor it into my finances.
But how can i maximize its safety?
Buy a clamp?
Alarm?
Remove the steering wheel?
Heck, maybe even remove two front wheels?
Ive no experience in doing this, so any suggestions will be appreciated.
Thanks.
Currently the car is on private land but ive got to move it soon.
The garage is also fairly hidden in an everyday average suburban area, but im still paranoid about it.
Because if someone takes it, i wont be covered.

if someone really wants it they will have it, all you can do is make it hard for them.

You can get battery powered alarms which will send you a text if someone enters the garage

Yeah, cheapest one i found was £200.
    Bit steep..
Its only a CRX Vtec (1991), but because the garage isnt within my sight, its gonna make me nervous..

Well remove the battery will help (good to do that anyway if it's not going to be used for a while). And make sure you have a good lock on the garage door(s). Obviously it needs to be SORNd if it's not taxed/insured in which case it cannot be driven on a public road what so ever (apart from taking it to a pre-arranged MOT) so it will have to be taken on a trailer to the new location.
    PLEASE NOTE

Thats happening, the car now is only about 2 miles from the garage and it will be transported on a trailer next monday.
The battery will be removed and put on a trickle charge but i dunno..
If someone steals the car, ive lost the 2.5k i just paid for it.

Well as I say, put a decent lock on the doors and try and make sure the doors close completely together and any windows are blacked out so you cannot see whats inside. If there is no battery on the car, they will have to go to great effort to steal the car.

BTW, 2.5k for a 1991 CRX... is it gold plated?

nothing to stop you insuring it for off road / laid up risks only, i.e fire and theft

    LOL

No, but it has only 9 thousand, yes NINE thousand miles on it...

It was stored in a Council garage since 1998!

Put it on axle stands, take the wheels off, and take the hub nuts home with you. If it has an engine ECU that is accessible, take that out too and hide it somewhere else. (I guess that is the modern equivalent of the wartime trick of removing the rotor arm!)

As others have said, if someone wants a car badly enough they will have it. All you can do is increase the time and difficulty of stealing it to the point where it isn't worth their while. Not many car thieves carry a full set of wheel nuts with them.

Take the engine out. Stops joyriders dead.

Doesnt stop people trying to weigh it in for scrap though.

Bigger risk will be the tools. If you are seen to leave them behind then they maybe the target rather than the car.

  • wire up the garage door to a simple 12 v battery and old car horn so when the door opens it blasts the horn

you could double this up and have a seperate system connected upto the garage door and the car as well

very simple to make using an old door switch from a scrap yard pretty effective at 2am in the morning

another simple and effective trick is have a series of short ish chains around the inside of the door, so even if they break open the padlock etc, they still need to unhook these extra (hidden to them) chains

all very simple stuff, but when combined and making a lot of noise, will make most people run away
