Please can someone recommend where/how to create a website.

I understand i have to buy the domain name (anywhere particular?)

And need a template for the website - i am only after something very simple.

How can i do this for free/tiny cost?

Hope someone can help! Thanks in advance

Try using Google to setup a site with them. It's all free.

    Good luck.

Are you bothered about what your website address is going to be? There's a website called webs(dot)com (sorry for that, can't post full links as I'm a newbie :P) where you can create a nice website using templates for free, as long as you don't mind including the word "webs" in your web address.

If you do mind that, then you'll have to pay something but it's not very expensive as far as I know.. And I used that website before for free.. It's easy to use and has some good templates..

Is a free website using a template really the impression you wish to put across to your visitors?

If it's a personal site it's not too bad, but as a business what does a freebie/cheap site say about you as a company? Your website is your online shop front, it's sometimes the first impression the customer gets about you and your business.

If it is business I would just wait until you have the cash to pay a professional and spare the potential damage to your reputation.

Sorry if this comes across as snotty, it's not my intention. I just would hate to see a business suffer for a cheapo/free website.

Lots of choices to buy your name co.uk names £10 ish for 2 years.

123-reg, easily etc etc etc etc..... long list

You can buy the name only of a host / server package.

This is like renting a PC thats always connected to the internet.

You can host it on your own PC if you leave it on 24/7.

Depends what you want and how many visitors you plan on getting the website content?

Ok so if i buy the domain i want for £20 then what?! How to physically create a site with that name rather than a .freewebsite name? Does buying the domain then mean it wil be hosted & searchable on google etc?

Really hope you can help! thanks

There are 3 parts to it.
    • Buy a domain - this has already been covered (but it is c. £10 for 2 years - so you won't be paying £20).
    • Buy hosting - you can either do this with the company you bought the domain from or if you don't like having all your eggs in one basket from a different host.
    • Creating the site - this really depends on your ability. You might be able to set up a site using Wordpress, but if you aren't able to do that then you would have to pay a designer/developer to do it for you (or to design a bespoke site).
Once all of the above you will have a website and then need to get it into Google etc. You can submit your site to the search engines and they will also eventually find it themselves if you have links from other sites.

The above is the generic answer - if you tell us a bit more about what you are looking for then we ca nprobably give you more specific info. For example, what do you want the site for - d oyou want to sell online or just give info?
  • Have a look at the Webplus X6 software for building a website.
There is no programming required - And it contains lots of very good templates.

PM me if you require any further info.

Hi, you can do that as well with the same website I mentioned before (WEBSdotCOM). You have everything included in there so you don't have to buy your domain name and hosting from two different places. Plus, they have a website builder that you can use to create your website so you don't need to pay silly money to anyone to do it for you.

There are different packages available - free, for personal use, small businesses, and pro. For your website I'd go for the small business package (also called Enhanced on that website) as it has good features and is for professional purposes. It's not too expensive if you pay for 1 or 2 years straight.

And finally, the good thing about that website is that you can start off for free. Sign up, check out the templates, try to create your website and see if you like it. Then you can upgrade to the enhanced package at any time and have your web address without any extra words. I've just been on there and they have an offer on the enhanced package as it's the most popular one. My friend has a business website made with that type of tool. It looks great and he pays little money for it. I'll also ask my friend which website he used to create his and let you know.

Hope this helps a little.. Good luck!

Wow thank you all so much for the replies I am so grateful!

The website is to sell sweets - it doesn't need to be complicated & there isn't a lot to say on there really(!)

I am pretty competent on computers (use email, internet,ms packages etc & have set up blogging pages before so confident I can do this with a template)

Just having a look at what you've all recommended now..
