I have to model and simulate heat transfer in an existing condensing boiler model to try to make it more efficient.
Collect the vapour from the exhaust in a resevoir, then when it reaches a certain level, send it down through a turbine to generate electricity. :D

Use a heat pump to extract the last ounce of energy out of the exhaust. COP = 3 means 300% efficiency.

Whatever happened to conservation of energy?.

Heatpumps do not violate conservation of energy.

A heatpump that produces 3kw of heat on 1kw of electricity is taking in at least 2kw of heat - (assuming 1kw goes directly to the output) from the outside - the air flowing out of the outside heat exchanger is cooled by 2kw, and this heat is then moved inside by the compressor.

The most efficient gas boiler in principle would be a internal combustion engine, with an efficiency of perhaps 25%, running a COP of 4 shaft-driven heatpump, which cooled the exhaust to 5C or so.

This would be about 180% efficient. (May require an external air input, in order to fully utilise the heatpump)

    Patent the thing straightaway.

It sounds like just what I want, except I would like a rotary engine (low vibration/noise) driving a dynamo/generator, which will power the central heating system in the event of a power cut, as well as electrically powering the heat pump. Probably burn more fuel under greater load, but keep revs constant.

There is questionable benefit in keeping revs constant - and it's probably better not to, but to convert it electrically, if you decide not to shaft couple it.

Unfortunately, the above would be murderously expensive to get reliable.
Note the decided lack of commercialisation of - for example - the Baxi Ecogen.
I should go and see if I can dig up the numbers on DECCs website on microCHP, to see how many of these are connected to the grid.
I would guess a few hundred.

As said try here. Several RGIs from your part of the world post (as well as trolls and know-nothings to be honest;))

now let me guess who you are ref too :rotfl:
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

It all comes back to the silly scenario where you have a perfectly good central heating system, but no electricity to run the pump, zones valves, ignition etc.

My central heating system can be isolated by flipping a single circuit breaker. Makro is selling a petrol generator, just don't really have room for it.
  • Thanks for all your replies here. Some really good advice here and unfortunately I completely missed them all. Thanks for your help anyway. All worked out well in the end!
