I'm so nervous!

Please reassure me! :rotfl:

In a few months I will be moving in with darling boyf. :j

I have a budget at the mo which I'm not too bad at sticking to, but pay nowhere near what I will when we're renting! (I'm with parents at the mo - easy life!)

Although he takes home double what I do, I don't want to live from him and I want to pay my way.

The properties we are looking at are IRO £550 per month (excl bills) and although the budget on paper looks ok (I have £109 'left over' even after savings for car spends) I'm worried that It'll be a stretch for me.

OH doesn't have to pay for mobile phone or anything to do with his car except petrol to and from work (which will be significantly reduced when we move).

Can you tell me if the following is about right? (Two bed house);

£100 Council Tax per month
£30 electricity
£20 water
£20 gas (CH & poss cooker)
£200 food/cleaning materials - we both take packed lunches & enjoy cooking from scratch - he has a bread maker and likes buying from Farm Shops does like his (alcohol-free for the moment) beer and wines - I like my snacks too!
£20 contents insurance
£30 broadband/phone (we will prob buy freeview plus I pay £6 pm for DVD delivery)

Have I missed anything 'non-personal'????

Thanks all!

  • Tv licence?

Also I think your council tax may be a little cheaper? We pay £85 and we live in a 3 bed end terrace.

Good luck!! I was in exactly the same situation as you 2 years ago and I was terrified, remember trying to iron curtains in the new house and breaking down so my mum had to come and help me I was so rubbish!!

We've just got our first mortgage though after a year of renting. You will be fine, dont worry!!

  • TV licence, emergency fund, any costs for furniture & maintenance. I know you said non-personal, but it would be worth your while putting aside some money each month towards medical/dental costs & birthday/Christmas presents, as £109pm will get eaten up surprisingly quickly. :)

    Ah TV licence!

We will save for this prior to moving in so should be able to pay it yearly - is this the cheapest way? It's years since I rented! :rotfl:

Is there a way to find out what my local council tax charges would be?

You obviously need to decide between you how everything will be split, but if he's earning double what you do, then I would consider it fair that he pays a higher proportion of the joint outgoings - otherwise you're not going to be able to afford to go on holiday, out to dinner etc unless he pays for that.

You may want to start putting some money aside for the odds & sods for when you move - you may need to get stuff like curtains, kitchen bits, storage etc, especially if it's an unfurnished place. Also, make sure you budget for a takeaway that first night (as liklihood is you won't be able to find a saucepan, let alone any food to cook in all the boxes!)

    Yum takeaway!

Between us we have some stuff for the flat. I have a lot of kitchen stuff, he has a sofa bed (which we will prob use for a while either as a sofa or a bed depending obn what we can get from Freecycle in time.)

We're both lucky in that we don't have to do an 'overnight' move in. We can both drop stuff of there and move in 'gradually' as and when we get bed, mattress etc!

We will try Freecycle initially for any furniture then replace as and when we can afford.

TBH darling boyf generally does pay when we go out but I do like to return the favour regularly even if it's something simple, so although we'll split the house things in half, he'll prob pay whenever we go out!

Do rentals usually come with curtains? I rented a furnished place last time which did so I don't know as this next place will probably be unfurnished!

Most people have mentioned the TV license but any thoughts on insurance. You will need to check your tenancy agreement that building insurance is covered but it wont cover your contents? Also, do you need a deposit? (When I have rented in the past, its usually a months deposit and a month's rent in advance).

Yes we will probably need IRO £700 deposit.

As before I paid contents but not buildings. I didn't think you needed to pay buildings if you were renting as this was covered by landlord? My OH is a loadlord and pays his building insurance.

You can find out your council tax banding from this site and unless anyone else knows another way, I would suggest contacting your local valuation office or council who should be able to advise you how much it would.

I used to rent a 2 bed flat with my ex. We paid £35/40 a month for gas and about £40/45 a month for electric. We got our contents insurance from Liverpool Victoria and it was only £12.10 a month and huge value of cover.
I think you have covered everything else but if i thinkof anything i will let you know!
