I also got this message this evening. According to the Telephone Preference Service website, restrictions on sms do not apply in the same way as marketing calls http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/tps/ . However, they do state that according to the Information Commissioners Office, you have to have requested to receive the text. Visionsms website is working and I have just emailed them telling them that I am opting out and threatening to report them to the regulator if I continue to receive their texts. Will let you know if it works. Thanks asea for the original post - it was the only reference I found to this and was very helpful

yes they do say that but people should always believe what people say.

here's an example from June 09, 2005 of unsolicited text messages.

    llegal Spammers Exposed

    Updated: 21:17, Thursday June 09, 2005
Companies are still willing to send out large numbers of unsolicited text messages despite the fact that the practice is illegal.
A Sky News investigation found a company that was happy to send out millions of spam texts to unsuspecting mobile users.
Telecom One Ltd runs two satellite television dating channels and provides downloads for mobile phones.

Posing as a potential client, a Sky News reporter met one of Telecom One's directors, Darell Curtis.

He agreed to send out two million unsolicited texts for £50,000, and was not worried about the law.

When Sky News said to him "What we're doing is effectively illegal", he replied: "It's not sort of illegal, it's bending the law".

He was happy to proceed with a deal and was not interested in what would be advertised by the messages.

Spamming was effectively banned when the European Directive on "Privacy and Electronic Communications" was introduced a year and a half ago, but offenders risk a maximum fine of only £5,000.

As a result some question how effective this law is, and there is little that individuals can do if they receive junk text messages.

Telecom One was not only willing to spam two million British mobile phone users, they also offered ways to help dodge the regulator.

Sky News has tried on numerous occasions to contact the company for a comment on its business practices but without success.

However, the industry regulator has said it is determined to punish spammers, and has recently issued a number of fines.
it's almost certain the people on this thread are among thousands of others who have just been targeted with a mass telemarketing fraud.
Other companies supply these "telemarketing" companies with lists of mobile numbers to send the text message to.
The text messages are usually of two types. Advertising spam or reverse billed jokes and crap.
It's crap that the ICO, Ofcom and Icstis will claim you opted in to recieve and pay for.
these are not scams, they are mass marketed fraud being committed on an industrial scale.

here's another little multimillion pound "scam" that icstis and ofcom allowed to happened throughout 2004.
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/4397308.stm
the companies in that BBC program were responsible for over 20% of all dialler related complaints to Icstis.
What premium rate numbers did they use? Telecom Ones!
The danish "scammer" identified by the BBC also happened to be a director of Telecom One in 1997.

That is the reason i posted the link for www.grumbletext.com as they deal with this area and can also help you get any money back that has been taken for unsolicited text messages.

It's very likely you are all being charged for recieving these text messages.
your PAYG accounts may be being debited with out your knowlege. Deleting the messages does not stop it.
This is what we know about the number you entered (61610).

We can tell you that this number (known as a 'shortcode') relates to a text message providing premium rate content such as ringtones, jokes, games, tarot and chat.

No I checked I did not get charged for either receiving the text or deleting it. I knew what my balance was before and after. Already thought of that one!!

Still not received any more text of the like but if I keep getting them, then yes I will ask Orange for a new number.

  • Well isn't this nice to see. Been a subscriber of the weekly email for sometime now and now the site helps me again!

Just found this forum article from searching in Google as a I too have fallen victim to this scam but big time. Today I have received nine text messages from either 61610 and 80122 and have been charged £1.50 for each text received, totalling £12 and that is just today. I have been on the phone to my mobile operator and they weren't much help, telling me it is up to me to stop the texts and they can't remove the charges from my pay monthly bill. It is really annoyed me, I have and never will subscribe to any of these text based subscription services yet they are raping my wallet just by sending me texts to my phone.

    Help, what do I do?
