Well thank you Mr NiftyDigits. Having only been a tablet user a fortnight, I too was wondering what use it would be away from home. I'm aware that umpteen places advertise free wifi, but I assume you need to go inside and ask the code, which might mean making a purchase. If I have understood this correctly, now I have the O2 app which brought along with it a map, I am now able to access freely providing I am in close proximity ?. Maybe you'd confirm this is correct please.
Two further questions.
Whilst my landline it talktalk, my mobile is Orange. When I clicked on "more information" it said:-
This app is incompatible with your Unknown GOTAB. so there you are.
Maybe you'd confirm there are no charges, hidden or otherwise?.with the O2 service, I ask this as I thought internet usage by mobile phone is chargeable and if so, how can they make tablet use free?
Ideally what I would like, is to be able to connect to the net when travelling by train. Some rail networks have this facility, but the one I use, doesn't. Is there a way? If not, as a new user of tablets, I am thinking to myself what use is a tablet without wifi internet connection?, (I don't do games). This is a system account and does not represent a real person. 1. Yes if your tablet can see an O2 hotspot is within range then yes it can connect.
2. Not sure abut the GOTAB part.
3. I take it you mean using wifi ?
As far as I know there no charges for using wifi hotspots (3G IS chargable), Ive used wifi in places like McDonalds, a local pub, Weatherspoons ( which I believe was at 1 point a BT/O2 venture and as Im on orange I couldn't register but Orange users now can use it ) and not been charged.
When on a train you could depending on your phone set it up as a modem so your tablet connects to the phone via wifi and the phone connects to the internet but as its on the train the signal would drop out when in a tunnel say.
You can read books on a tablet, you can store news articles to read at later date when your not using wifi.
The difference is Mobile phones are on a phone network eg Giff Gaff, EE, vodafone etc and the phones can access the mobile internet/3G which can be chargeable depending on your data plan/tariff.
Tablets can be used on wifi and 3G and have various means of achieveing this.0 -

So sign up manually. In addition you can contact Orange to check if BT WiFi usage is included with your current mobile phone and/or broadband tariff.
So your telephone line is TalkTalk and you broadband and mobile telephone is with Orange?
Personally I have a MiFi unit that creates a Personal WiFi Hotspot for that sort of thing. Some mobile telephones have a similar capability.
You will need to give more details about your specific packages if you would like more detailed advice.0 -

DCFC79, when you say "you can store news articles to read at later date when your not using wifi.". I have no idea how to do this. Is it easy?, I don't know the route to downloading stuff or where it should be saved, sorry. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Theres an app called pocket on the play store, whilst connected to your wifi and you find a news story you want to read later you can choose to share it with a variety of options and 1 of them is pocket. In dolphin theres 3 small sqaures on top of each other in the top right corner of the screen so tap that and choose share and when you want to read it you find " pocket " and tap to open it.
Ive only used it in chrome so cant say if it works in dolphin or another browser.0 -
