Why are people discussing being pedants? It is not remotely pedantic to know the difference between 'your' and 'you're'.
  • I hate how people think it's snobby and pedantic to care about spelling and grammar, it's always people who don't know how to spell who feel that way too/also ? ! I am quite sure that real English experts will find faults in my post, but at least I know the basics thoroughly.

lve just copied a poem down, the last line is spelt
"you're new life as husband and wife has begun" is that how its supposed to be spelt as l always thought you're was short for you are, thanks for any help

After reading the poem, it would make sense that it is indeed you're and not your .
And no I have not posted that to start debate :o

You are new life as husband and wife....with children to follow.
  • Ok,ok,this thread is boring now....your all correct,..you're posts have certainly answered the question.....

    It is 'your'!

'Your' indicates possession as in mine and yours, in this context, 'your' meaning 'possession of the two of you jointly'.

'You're' is an abbreviation, should be 'you are'.

    Pedant alert... ;)

An abbreviation would be to remove letters from one end of a word e.g. abbr. for abbreviation.

Removing letters from the middle of a word or word group is a contraction. e.g. you're for you are

I don't think it's pedantic or snobby to care about spelling and grammar. However, while it's acceptable on this thread to correct and explain, I don't think it would go down very well if we were to correct all the spellings and grammar errors found in posts in general.

I agree because some are due to illness/disability, but some are just plain lazy ;-)

And I have dyslexia which means, although I can type ok, I don't often see that ihave put the letters in the wrong order or forgotten full stops. So thanks for pointing that out. (I am a bit thick too but that's a whole 'nother story :D)

In the past I always posted here from a computer and was pretty intolerant of poor spelling and apparently poor grammar.

Now that I often post from an iPad I am rather more sympathetic.

    Damn you, auto cucumber.
