The only thing that really gets my goat is if anyone says 'should of' 'would of' or could of' or when people say they have done something 'off their own back' (it's bat, really, it's bat, if anyone doesn't believe me look up 'back' and then 'bat' in a dictionary - which one has the phrase?). Oooops, ranting now but this one's so often wrong and the person insists they are right!
Dunno why but those are the errors that really grate (I just know someone on here will pm me 'off their own back' very soon, lol!!!).:rotfl:
I don't think it's very fair to point out people's grammatical and spelling errors and ridicule them in an open forum. Would you do the same to somebody you met in the street who was physically disabled? I think probably not.
Don't get me wrong, I get as irritated as you by the appalling level of grammar and spelling on here (and elsewhere on the net, too), but I think that everybody has a right to air their views whatever their level of literacy or education may be.0 -
Just to let you know (sorry if this has been posted before) but yesterday used two 1.25 Huggies wipes vouchers from P and B March issue against 2 packs of wipes in Tesco. Wipes were on BOGOF so worked out free and 1p off the rest of my shopping:j :j .
Useful if you really do buy wipes;)0 -
This looks like a great offer, please tell us more about it if you have the time. Thanks a lot

She hadn't picked anyone up. She was making a general comment.
I also have to say you CANNOT compare someone's disability with anothers levels of literacy. A disabled person is usually disabled for life. People with literacy problems have a wealth of help nowadays; there are free3 courses to go on everywhere. usually people have no desire to join them, and often illiteracy stems from not being ars** in school, not listening, and playing computer games instead of reading books.
Sorry, sound sharsh, but in many cases true.
My hubby always drove me mad when we met. he would say "I seen so and so today. I've took my coat off. he done that well." drove me mad.
His spelling is also not that good, and although he can write and express himself, I know his vocab is somewhat limited.
(eg, he could not have written that last sentence. He'd have put "I can write ok but i dont know lots of words".) he always writes half in capitals and half in lower case also.
he has NEVER read a book! he reads the sport pages avidly, but I cannot get him to read, even though the 2 kids and I are passionate readers. My children have a more extensive vocabulary than he does, at 13 and 9, because they read so much. Reading to the mind is exercise to the body!
His writing is still not that good BUT his grammar is now near impeccable because once we'd been together long enough I pointed the bad grammar out and although he was a bit huffy at first, when I explained there would be a conflict when we had kids if I was trying to get them to speak correctly and they said "But Dad says this" he asked me to always correct him when he was wrong, but NOT when we were in company.
I duly did, and within a year his grammar was much better. Now, he comeas home from footie and says "You should have heard what soand so was saying" lol
So, people can learn and can improve their skills. You shouldn't really compare them to a disabled person. There are opportunities galore to further ones skills and it is never too late to learn
And in case anyone picksanything of mine up. I CAN spell, punctuate etc etc but I can't type and I haven't got time to read through this and correct everything!

Have you considered the fact that maybe some of the people who like to join in and chat on the MSE forums are not just lazy people who didn't bother to listen at school, but might have a learning DISABILITY (eg dyslexia) which means their written skills aren't perfect.
Also, the example you gave of your husband wanting you to correct his mistakes is irrelevant in this context, as (as far as I am aware) nobody who posts on MSE has ever requested corrections to their grammar and spelling from other forum members.
I do concede that on this occasion, the comment made was a general one, however, I have seen many occasions on MSE when posters have made fun of a specific individual for their errors in spelling/grammar/punctuation.
Sorry for being so off-topic, but I just think it's a real shame when these situations occur, because it might put people off posting because they are worried their skills aren't up to the exacting standards of other MSE'rs.
My apologies, everybody, back to coupons etc:beer:0 -
Careful everybody .... we don't want this turning into the open battleground the Newspaper thread became the other day ...
I personally did not mind Coupon-mad pointing out my spelling error ... She did in fact wait blooming ages before letting me know ... and I consider her an MS pal and therefore took it in good heart ...
Lets face it we all are Grumpy-Old-Women at times ... including the men folk amongst us ... and little things annoy us ... I personally would put spelling and grammar behind .... (ha ha ... nearly got grammer wrong then ...)
Not saying please ... Posting "this has been on for ages" on duplicate posts ... Not pushing the thanks button ...
I do enjoy however the odd off topic frivolous post ... would love to post a tin of Spam for once ... and I love the commaradarie on this thread ... and if that's not spelled correctly I have no idea how to fix it ....
We should and do i hope all practise tolerance ... there but for the grace of God and all that ... I mean non of us are Doctor's of Philosophy are we ... ?
Err ....
PS ... think this is :spam:LittleBill ... "The riches of a man can be measured by what he can do without"0
