Microsoft Works on Windows 7

When I convert to Windows 7 from XP, I will need to be able to continue with my book keeping accounting files made with the free Works that came with the Medion PC I am currently using. Of course I don't think Windows 7 home premium will have this. Is there any other free software that will be able to read/write these files in Win 7 as I am not yet familiar with it?

Thanks.

If you still have the Works installation CD, it should be installable on Windows 7.

Failing that, download the (free) LibreOffice, which has a Works import filter.

The Works came with the Medion PC already set up with XP so I don't think I have access to it.

Microsoft Works should have been on one of the installation CDs/DVDs which accompanied the PC! If not, it might be on the hard disk in an appropriately-named directory.

If neither, you might be able to find a recent version of Works on Ebay or elsewhere. I note on Amazon you can get Works 9 for just over £21 or Works 8 for just over £13.

If you can get hold of (just) the Works CD you ought to be able to get your product key from your PC using a program like Nir Soft's ProduKey, and so could reinstall it - assuming you're using the same PC for Windows 7.

Ok, I found the Works disk and installed it perfectly on my new windows 7 PC. When I try to open works files copied from my old computer I get the message "Works was unable to open the file. The file may be corrupted"

The file works perfectly in Works on e old PC. It is a works created file. Why are computers so annoying ?

Why not use Libre Office as suggested? Works is unsupported, has little compatibility with other packages, and is effectively obsolete now. Time to move on.

Hmmm. If Works won't open the original Works-created files, it would be quite likely that the LibreOffice Works filter might not be able to open them either.

The only way to find out is to try!

They may ask for a donation, which by definition is voluntary. :)

Just be sure to select your chosen language.

Assuming you want Windows and GB language

Neither Libre Office, nor Open Office, or even Microsoft Word itself, will open any Works documents. Works is a totally different programme to the others named. I first found that out in 1996 and it is, AFAIK, still true today.

I am afraid that your only resort, is to download Libre Office or Open Office (Both are Free to download.) and use a proper document-writing programme. Unfortunately, you will lose all your Works stuff in its present form. Do you have printouts?

Your book keeping/accounting was probably carried out in spreadsheet form: this is all possible with Libre and/or open Office. Both programmes can convert to, or save in, Microsoft Word and both have Database and Presentation facilities. I used Ms. Office Pro for my last business, the disc became corrupted after I retired, so I began using Open Office and never again used Ms Office, don't need it.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

Others will correct me, :D but you need to convert the documents on the XP computer from 'Works' (.wps) to 'Rich Text Format' (.rtf).
You need to open each one, then 'Save As', select Rich Text format.

In Windows7, Libreoffice or MS Office Word *should* open them.
