any point in taking out extended boiler warranty

Hi,

We fitted a new vokera boiler 2 years ago and it came with a free 2 yr warranty, they have just sent us a letter saying it is expiring but we can purchase their extended warranty.

I'm a new homeowner so don't know much about this kind of stuff. Normally i am wary of guarantees for things such as TV's as most often you pay for nothing but do the MSE'ers feel it would be worth taking this out? Are the warranties offered by the manufacturer generally better than those offered by the energy companies (e.g., scottish power boiler cover)?

Depends on whether they will say there is no evidence of maintenance for years, and so not covered.

Yeah it has had a service annually for the last 2 years since we bought it.

Generally though are you better taking the cover from the manufacturer or the likes of Scottish power etc?

Generally you are better off putting aside the money for the extended warranty; and for that matter any maintenace plan.

On balance you will be better off employing a local RGI to service annually and repair if required.

Yes, the mythical good local plumber, like

    1. Used car, One careful lady owner.
    2. Hooker with a heart of gold.
    3. The loosest slot in Las Vegas.

    Good luck finding one.

My regular guy is good, but too good, because he is so busy I would be lucky if he turns up three weeks after I call.

We have home emergency insurance with swinton at £4.99 a month, I've call them out twice since christmas and I must say they've been brilliant. The boiler is covered to have work costing up to £500 a call out.
    Rubbish at the grocery challenge!

Manufacturer's cover is always the best option, but will only cover the boiler and may be slightly more expensive.

Mostly you will get a 95% first time fix with the manufacturer's
  • we use a BG service and repair contract at £19 a month for a 2 year old bolier/system and this inc an annual service,so far so good and they proved last year that they knew what they were doing when the "local"guy was just after £££,inc suggesting a power flush for a system that had only been in use for 8 months

From what I read on this forum the powerflush seems to be the current scam of choice. Our system has been in use for over 15 years, has never been flushed and works perfectly. The Thermecon oil boiler gets an annual service for about £55-60 and that's it.

It's the simple law of Murphy ....

take out a warranty and it won't break - don't take it out and you will have problems forever!!!

Ours for 25 years. - same boiler, no Magnaclean, no power flush required.

Until a few years ago I had never heard the term. Now it appears it is almost mandatory at a cost of £hundreds.
