Iceland: Bag of frozen cauliflower florets £1 !!0 -
The best use for frozen cauliflower is for soup, the last one I made with some Camembert in it was delicious.0

Pretty sure the greengrocer or farm shop will have them for less than a quid.
Supermarkets at fault here rather than the farmers
Tesco had a medium sized one but would not pay that much for it, Asda had tiny ones again not worth the money for me.
Local Indian shop had nice big ones at :eek::eek:£2.48 (the ones Tesco normally did last year for £1.78) and the indian veg shop next door had small ones which looked old at £1.99!
Wish I had gone to the shops first then the supermarkets as I would have bought 1 purely for the reason that I try and get as much veg down my boys as possible even if it means going a little over my £20 a week milk and food budget.
We've not had cauliflower now for 4 weeks, oh well may be I'll get a yellow sticker in Tesco tomorrow?0 -
What puzzles me is why Ocado can sell an organic cauliflower from Waitrose for less than the price of a non-organic cauli in Swansea market ??
Secondly, surely supermarkets pay a deposit or percentage up front or even an agreed price for the crop when they order cauliflowers from a farmer ? If they've already paid in full then the price to the customer shouldn't go up because the farmer wasn't able to deliver or because he did but other farmers haven't.
First point....A loss leader?? Or profit for the market trader
Second point....profit.
I buy from the farm shop down the road...50p - the supermarket rejects I suppose...they are enormous and keep for several weeks without getting discoloured or smelly. Not organic though...but fresh from the fields.0 -
Unfortunately the wet weather had a massive impact on last years harvest - before xmas I went to get one from JS - the ones they did have (very few) were tiny and they had signs up saying supply was limited / crops were small due to the weather conditions. Winter cauli season is Nov - May, so I imagine last 'summer' followed by the atrocious conditions this winter / spring have had a real effect on the harvest in the UK. UK supply will be less = higher prices, and imported ones will have additional logistics costs = higher prices.Feb 2015 NSD Challenge 8/12JAN NSD 11/16

and Riverford organic @ £1.750 -
I always buy from the fruit and veg stall, and only ever if it is a price I'm prepared to pay (eg 2 giant caulis for £1.50). Would it be rude to point out that they are in season in the summer, so we can reasonably expect silly prices at this time of the year?
Perhaps it's only me that eats with the seasons

Cauliflower has winter and summer varieties so it shouldn't ever be out of season.0

My brother who lives in a fairly rural area of France is paying around £4.60 for a cauli I would rather do without than pay that price0

i think i read somewhere that cauliflower was always in season in uk so must be down to rubbish growing conditions i supposeonwards and upwards0
