Almost £2 for cauliflower!!!

I am quite surprised that no-one has mentioned this.

Yes I know the weather has not been the best for British produce. But charging £1.95 (Sain) and £1.98 (Tes) for a standard size cauli is taking the p**s.

Asda got theirs at £1.38 and I bought a HUGE one there a few weeks ago for 50p. Aldi have theirs for just over £1

I am refusing to purchase these at that price. I am not even bothering with frozen cauliflower as its very watery, tasteless and mushy.

Pretty sure the greengrocer or farm shop will have them for less than a quid.

Supermarkets at fault here rather than the farmers

I feel exactly the same. Although cauli is one of my favourite veg I won't pay over £1. If the ones in Aldi aren't big enough or firm enough then I just change the menu. No way am I paying the daft prices at Sainsbury's.

When I started to notice that pineapples were cheaper than cauliflowers I realised that someone was taking the p*ss!;)

Love to, but I don't have any independent veggie shops near me. All flippin supermarkets. I don't like market veg either as its goes off in front of your eyes.

Of course we understand that. But does that explain why those caulis that are available are so expensive? It might be about 'supply and demand' but surely that's the same as saying that the shops will charge whatever they can get away with as people must eat cauliflower. The answer is we don't have to eat cauliflower so we'll vote with our feet and change the menu. Admittedly we all have to eat but we do still have a little power over supermarkets.

What puzzles me is why Ocado can sell an organic cauliflower from Waitrose for less than the price of a non-organic cauli in Swansea market ??

Secondly, surely supermarkets pay a deposit or percentage up front or even an agreed price for the crop when they order cauliflowers from a farmer ? If they've already paid in full then the price to the customer shouldn't go up because the farmer wasn't able to deliver or because he did but other farmers haven't.

A cauliflower is one of the hardest crops to grow anywhere as you simply need a fair bit of pesticides to keep it pretty. I bless any farmer who can grow organic cauliflower for under £1.5

BTW Aldi's and Lidl medium cauliflower is £0.89,which is where I get mine.

Agree about frozen cauliflower and calabrase (Broccoli), it's a wast of space taste wise and not much cheaper than fresh.
