Avg 2013

Hello

I have the free version of AVG2013 & although the computer is working ok i seem to be having a problem updating AVG. The AVG icon the the bottom right of the screen has a yellow triangle with an ! in it normally i just click on the icon & click updates & it takes care of itself & the triangle goes.

However, this time after updating a message says to complete the update the computer need to be restarted. I do all this but the update still does no complete & the triange stays. Although the various info about the settings indicate i am still protected.

Should i un-install/re-install the AVG or replace it with something else like Avast, i am not technically minded.

My O/S is Vista & i have Windows forewall.

Thanks

I had issues with my computer booting up. It got slower and sometimes it would hang after logging in.

Initially thought hardware issue. But AVG started to has update issues. So i removed it.
Installed Avast and my bootup problems have now gone also. No more slowdowns.

AVG use to be a good Anti Virus Program back in the day in my eyes but as time has developed, Avast blows this away.

I'd certainly uninstall AVG and go back and try Avast, Its a popular choice along with Microsoft Security Essentials (Another Freebie thats worth a look at)

One note of interest - with AVG, after your system is started up, on occasions when it was all loaded and ready to go you'd think, it may have probably froze for several seconds? Avast irons this problem out and never has anything like this which is common throughout AVG.

All in all, people will tell you all day different things to try, but personally Avast is a good back up whilst AVG constantly pings you to update, it may just want you to purchase premium and continue to annoy you until you do. A smart trick... Avast all the way or Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE).

    Thanks for the advice.

I also think its a marketing tool to pester people to upgrade to paid for protection.

Should i install Avast & the un-install AVG or vice versa.

Do i have to back everything up 1st before changing anti virus.

    Thanks

This is a very true fact too.

No need to back up anything just an uninstall then install new Anti Virus, you wont be losing anything when you uninstall an Anti Virus.

Avast clogs your comp up & slows it down, continually ask you to update, and if you not careful youve got a 30 day trial of the paid version, when that ends, youve got no cover, cant go back to the free version, and when you go to uninstall, you cant unless your ok with "Safe Mode", yes a lot of you are, but a lot arnt.
AVG does a full scan in less than 1hour, Avast & MSE take hours.
    AVG is fine by me.

But AVG is also a slow clogging software (dependant on variant of computer and OS) it can clog up the start up of ones computer.

Its all down to personal choice in my eyes, what you feel comfortable with which your computer runs smooth with. AVG only just beats Avast in a comparison but if i had a windows i'd go for bit defender before i looked here - http://anti-virus-software-review.toptenreviews.com

I recently fixed a friends PC that was chock-full of malware. AVG indicated that a system file contained a virus but was unable to fix it. Malwarebytes, Spybot, Trend Micro Housecall and a couple of other antimalware programs got rid of a lot of the junk, but AVG kept flagging this one file. I eventually started to assume it was a false-positive. I submitted the file to a number of online analysers and each one reported that the file was fine.

Then I removed AVG and installed Avast. It detected malware that had been missed by all the other programs, and (as far as I can tell) the PC is clean again. AVG did seem to detect a problem, but flagged a file that was perfectly fine.

In the past I've used AVG, Avast and Avira and at different times each has seemed superior to the others. But if my last experience is anything to go by, I'd ditch AVG and go with Avast for now.

To install Avast without it conflicting with AVG I would download Avast, uninstall AVG (rebooting if prompted), then install Avast.

That can be indicative of the presence of a rootkit. Processes can be injected with code whilst in memory which would lead to the detection, whilst the file on disk may scan clean should you attempt to scan it.

Try Avira too. It was least resource hogger when I tried.
