Santander 123 - No Students Allowed

Posts: 497 Forumite

Really?
I'm currently a full-time student who also happens to temp for an agency (and have been doing so for the past five years). I wanted to apply for an account via Quidco (the £55 offer expires in one day), but I can't in good conscience completely fill out the application form. In addition to directly contravening their no student policy, I earn a highly variable income.
I want to open an account (as well as a FlexDirect) to take advantage of the interest rates, but these complications are rather irritating. I can fulfill the minimum monthly deposit requirements, so that's not an issue.

I gather you would be a part time student.
I expect that clause is to rule out uni students.Interests: PCs. servers, networks, mobiles and music (esp. trance)0 -
I'm a full-time university student. I work on an ad hoc basis, and can go weeks/months without employment income.0

Think that'll exclude you then.Interests: PCs. servers, networks, mobiles and music (esp. trance)0

I'm a student in FT work for the moment, applied and got turned down. To be fair when I go back to uni my income will drop etc.
Barclaycard don't seem to like students much either - you have to pick 'unemployed', but I'd say student is better than unemployed as many will get some guaranteed income from SFE and possibly have a part time job too.
Only thing I can think of is its to try and stop house sharers using it as a 'bills' account and paying everything from it - in a large houseshare that could add up. If it's in a sole name, you could then add any savings to it and get say the 2 or 3% plus cashback.
One potential loophole.... I've been accepted for their 'everyday current account'. Once you have that it's possible to upgrade it in online banking, and it seems to be pre-approved. You tick a disclaimer agreeing to £2 a month fee, adjusted statement date etc. I haven't done it as there's little point this late in the year, so can't say for sure if it will work, but certainly seems an option on my account, so you could try that. I may upgrade to it next year!0 -
Where in the T&Cs does it state you cannot have a 123 account if you are a student?

It excludes pensioners too as we don't have a monthly salary to go in even though we could transfer a one off deposit from our savings or even a monthly sum from our savings.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Any more posts you want to make on something you obviously know very little about?"
Is an actual reaction to my posts, so please don't rely on anything I say.0 -

It doesn't, but before commencing the application, the page states:Before you apply, make sure you are:
at least 18 years old;
living permanently in the UK;
are not a student or in full term education.
I still tried applying online, but hit another roadblock when it came to employment status. "Student" isn't an available option, but technically I'm employed (I believe so anyway).
I could just apply regardless and probably take a hit to my credit rating in the process.0 -

No it doesn't. It excludes you if you can't fund it by £500 a month-nothing to do with your pensionable or employment status. You can simply SO back and forth from and to another account on the same day, whch is what I do.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

I wouldn't worry so much about the words on the application screens. The decisive terms are in the T&Cs.
If you are over 18, employed part-time, and have a decent credit record, nobody would sensibly deny you a current account because you are also studying alongside your job?0 -
