Eligibility for carers allowance

Would an elderly couple be eligible for any carers benefits if they had over £16k in savings?
In this situation, one of them is needing to pay for a carer to come in daily and wash them etc.
Just information gathering.

Capital doesnt come into carers but when you say elderly do you meen OAPS because you cant claim carers and state pension because they overlap

Thanks Richard. I may be using the wrong terminology in what I am asking as it all unfamiliar to me. Yes they are in their 80's and needing to pay for a carer to come in daily and do basic care.

What I don't mean, is one of them being paid as a carer of the other, but the one needing help getting money to help pay for that help.

Do either of them get Attendance Allowance? This is given for pensioners with care needs and could be used for carers to come in. It is not means tested at all.

I would also suggest contacting social services for an assessement of their needs.

Is it funding for care you're asking about BB hon? Nice to see u again btw. As Torry said, best place to ask is at social services. The can assess their needs and see what can be put in place to help them and maybe even some funding x

Many thanks Torry. I sounds like it is attendance allowance that I mean then, great (And no they don't get that).
They have an assessment taking place next week by a private care company recommended by their GP.

I would still say that contacting social services is a very good idea. They will now all the local companies and may also have some funding available.

And a report from Social Services (OT department) goes a long long way in proving the needs to get Attendance Allowance.

Totally agree. Depending on funding available they may also be able to provide some aids that would be helpful round the house too.

You can in some circumstances. It depends on their income.

My parents both received AA for themselves and CA for looking after each other. As they were getting their state pensions, they weren't able to get the full amount of CA but were entitled to "an underlying entitlement to CA" which brought in some extra money each week.

Absolutely, CA increases the applicable amount for guarantee Pension Credit as carer premiums are added.
