New flat, broadband (asap)?

Hi all,

I read the 'find the cheapest broadband' article, but I have a further hope/requirement which is that when I move into a rental property (in 2.5 weeks), I have broadband up-and-running as fast as possible after the move, preferably immediately or close to it.

Can anyone give me some advice on what I can do to make this happen, and if relevant, suggest any specific ISPs that might be good choices for speed of setup? Will it make any difference if I can find out whether the previous tenants had any particular service active?

(I'll be after a package with fairly good speed and usage limits, could be bundled with tv or phone or both potentially, low price not the objective, good service is :))

Well if theres an existing tennant at the property then you'll need to wait till they've moved out before taking over the phone line in terms of account etc. If its empty now then i'd recommend getting a line sorted asap so you can then get your broadband on for your arrival! :)

The exiting tenants won't be out til a couple days beforehand, so I don't have much control there; does that mean providers literally can't/won't start anything til I am actually resident?
I realise that obviously they wouldn't be implementing any changes, but stuff like the admin side, perhaps sending me the router/modem, might be worth getting into pre-emptively?
Any thoughts on whether some ISPs are faster than others to get going?

    Thanks!
  • Unfortunately, there's very little you can do until you're living in your new property 'cos BT won't get the ball rolling till then and without a BT line your ISP can't even put an order for your ADSL service. Your ISP will have plenty of time to send you the modem and login details in the week or so BT takes to activate your ADSL, anyway. If you got the equipment/details now (which you won't 'cos ISPs don't send this until BT confirms an activation date to them), they'd be gathering dust for weeks. ;)

Maybe the best thing you can do right now is to tell the prospective landlord to ask the outgoing tenants to cancel their BT line at that property as soon as they move out and then pray for that line not to have been LLU'ed!
The true cost of something is what you give up to get it.

Makes sense, thanks again; yeah, not overly concerned about price as I'd rather pay for quick/reliable! But a monthly provider as an opening gambit makes good sense.
