    Ok, so I've done this:

To make hibernation unavailable, follow these steps:
Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box.
In the search results list, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as Administrator.
When you are prompted by User Account Control, click Continue.
At the command prompt, type powercfg.exe /hibernate off, and then press ENTER.
Type exit and then press ENTER to close the Command Prompt window.

and my batch file looks like this now:
    powercfg -h off
    rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState 0,1,0

Edit I think it is working. Thanks for your help. I thought the fan would stop but it's still making a racket.

confusing the issue a little by googling, your batch file disables hibernation, that's the whole point of powercfg -h off

provided you dont reenable it with an ON , during testing, then the admin issue goes away

fan or hard disk making a noise?

    thought it was working before?

One last thing. Is there any way to tell it to run as administrator within the task scheduler?

Sorry. It is the fan. It is a very noisy machine indeed and I think the disc did stop spinning ( hard to hear over the sound of the fan)

So shall I go back to cmd and undo what I did?

    Oh dear. Something's not right.

So when I followed google and used cmd to disable hibernation, the task scheduler worked and made pc sleep

When I undid it ( by that I mean re-enable in cmd) and ran the schedule it went into hibernation.

Maybe I shouldn't call it a program sorry. By program I meant the batch file to make it sleep.

    try again

what are you running from sleep, what is the purpose of this project, you want it to wake up and do what?

    I'm lost.

the schedule job doesn't sleep because it isn't being run as admin I suspect, so you enabled hibernation, then scheduled powercfg failed.

Ok, so the position I'm in now.

    A) Hibernation enabled ( ie back to before I googled ).
    B)
A batch file on my desktop with the following inside it:
    powercfg -h off
    rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState 0,1,0

    C) a schedule with trigger time and action: start a program C: \xxx\xxxx\sleep.bat

How can I force the .bat to run automatically as administrator within scheduler? This is the point of failure I think. The task scheduler is not running the file as administrator and I don't see how to make it.

Sorry the purpose is partly as an exercise to start learning basics but also if successful it would be useful.

I just want to pc to sleep ( not hibernate or shut down at say 2300) so that it can then wake up again automatically in the morning as I'm already using the waking program recommended near the top of this thread ( wake up on standby).

I just don't want the machine fully on overnight. It is being used during daylight hours only to run a videoing program which fired up fine with the other program ( wake up on standby - post 3). At the moment I've been manually making the pc sleep each evening and am feeling lazy. It needs to be in sleep mode to enable WUOS work in the morning

if you never want it to hibernate, just disable hibernation

then you can forget all about the powercfg lines in the batch file.
