Cutting fireplace to size

Hi all,

We currently have a gas fireplace:

We're looking at buying a Stovax Riva 55 to fit in there, but it's not likely to fit exactly.

Do we need to buy a replacement bit of marble (that goes between the fireplace and mantlepiece) or can we get it cut to the right size?

Thanks.

There are a number of factors, you are not taking into account at the moment, that need answering.

Firstly, what is the surround made of? It looks suspiciously like resin, which won't be suitable with a riva 55. It could melt !

Secondly, The hearth is not to specs, by the looks of it, It is a 54''x15'' hearth. For solid fuel, you require an 54'' x 18'' hearth , which should be slabbed up with cement. Any air pockets below the hearth, will expand and crack the marble.

Thirdly, the marble you have looks like it is pure, which is ok to use, but the back panel would need splitting into, ideally 4 pieces then slabbed up with concrete, to stop the back panel from cracking again. The issue then would be, is the rebate on the surround deep enough to fit the slabbed back panel? If not, you need a new surround, That is , if the surround is suitable in the first place.

You can get it cut to size, but you will need the things above doing to it, if you don't want to have to replace it , in a couple on months time.

    Hope this helps
