Well for one I have too much money to just stuff under the bed besides it isn't what I call secure. I was hoping there was another option...... something like a post office maybe but not sure on how that would work. I need somewhere that is secure and safe from the hands of the $ankers.

I noticed that you said no to the poll.... Have you actually looked up on what they have discussed at the G20 Financial Stability Board? It is clearly on the cards that what has happened in Cyprus will happen here.

Er, I didn't vote in the poll.

I haven't looked up what they discussed but I doubt it has much relevance to me as I have sfa in the bank anyway! :rotfl:

Invest it in a credit union or some business ventures then ;)

I pay absolutely nothing by direct debit and never will.

If the government take from people's bank accounts like they have in Cyprus can they take from people's investments like shares or unit trusts? If not maybe the time has come to dump the banks and start investing in the markets.

    why not direct debits?

I think a big problem here is people assuming all countries and their governments are alike .Just because one country does something , there is no reason to think another country would do the same thing .

However I have thought for a long time that people who have upped sticks and moved lock stock and barrel to other countries to live may soon realise the trade off for cheaper housing , and living and sun , might just be a huge bite in the bum sooner rather then later.

We have always had a pretty stable government , the pay off might be less disposable cash in your pocket but it sure as hell beats some slightly dodgy government taking everything you own .

God knows we have enough people here blaming immigrants for all thats ( perceived to be ) wrong , they tend to forget about the huge numbers of Brits who have emigrated , what happens when their adopted homeland turns on them

It is not the bankers taking the money it is the government. If you don't trust the government then your money isn't safe anywhere in this country in any kind of investment. You need to take it offshore.

Rich Cypriots and foreign investors may complain about the levy but their other option is to let the government and the banks go bankrupt and they will lose everything. There is no chance of the situation becoming that desperate here, there are far less controversial ways to raise money.

Or invest in a better government ? , I think you will find in the case of Cyprus it was them to blame

It amused me greatly watching the expats whine 'what about us?' when the government flew 1 million in Euros out to help the troops and their families.
