Can you remember what your BIL gave as a wedding gift to you both when you married? Im just wondering if it was £300 cash and your wife feels she NEEDS to give the same amount back as a gift otherwise it may cause issues?

I'm sure the BIL would rather your kids be warm with heating than be given £300 cash when it sounds like they don't really struggle for money.

My sister is getting married in Oct and after paying debts for 7 yrs i have learnt that i can only buy what i can afford, but i am lucky that my sister knows that i can only give a certain amount.

I really hope you manage to persuade your wife to think wisely and use that money sensibly!

Yep I know, I don't think that would bother her, her priorities are all wrong, but maybe she will see sense.

PS my second name is Jones believe it or not:D

Blimey. It's great that you're keeping a sense of humour!:rotfl:

It's hard to know what to say. Did your wife say where she would get the money from? Are you on good terms with her brother? Could you speak to him and explain the situation?

I know what it's like to feel everyone has more money than you do but believe me, getting into financial distress to keep up appearances isn't worth it.

I guess she was probably planning on using the child benefit to pay for it, she hasn't thought about what the car MOT is gonna cost, I had redundancy money last year to pay for it, I don't have that luxury this year.

Even when DH and I have been earning £100k+ between us we've never given more than £100 as a gift.

    Your wife is crackers!!!

Have you worked out a proper Statement of Affairs (not necessarily to post here) which shows all your incomings and outgoings? Could you sit down with your wife in the evening and go through it, working out how you can manage your budget? It's not really just about MOT v huge wedding gift - it's about what you can and can't afford on a regular basis.

Your child benefit should be used for clothes, shoes etc, not lavish gifts to family members. But you know that. Sorry to preach!
