Cancelled flight missed connecting...Vanuatu

While travelling last year I ended up in the Pacific islands of Vanuatu. While there I bought a return flight from Port Vila to one of the southern islands, Tanna. Everything was fine.
The return flight was cancelled and I was put on the afternoon flight back to Port Vila (the capital) This however meant that I then missed my flight to Auckland, New Zealand. Air Vanuatu put me up in a hotel for the night however I did have to buy a my flight to Auckland.
I tried to claim on my travel insurance but they wouldnt pay out as it wasnt a full 24hrs that I was in Vanutau after the cancelled flight. I had to get to Auckland that day as I then had a connecting flight to Melbourne. I then went to Air Vanuatu who was my airline taking me from Tanna to Port Vila. They told me they would not pay anything as it was only their job to get me from Tanna to Port Vila (basically they didnt care that I had to pay for my flight to Auckland because I'd missed my original one)
I dont see that its fair they can cancel then not have any responsibility. I have tried finding the CEO of Air Vanuatu's email address but cant find it. Can anyone help? Or any ideas how I can get my money back?

Sounds right to me. Not their fault you had a separate flight booked. Surprised your insurance doesn't cover the cost of the missed flight.0 -

They are correct. This is the gamble you take when you chose to travel on separate tickets. You have 2 separate contracts 1 from A to B and 1 from B to C
Your A to B flight was cancelled and you were put on a later flight and delivered you to Airport B as they were contracred to. Full Stop.
As far as the airline for your B to C flight is concerned, you failed to turn up to check in on time so to travel on a new flight would depend on the type of ticket you had. Flexible, changeable for a fee or non-changeable....(I assume you had the latter hence having to buy a new ticket.)
The only place to go for help would have been your travel incurance and if they have already said no there is nothing much you can do0
