Ryanair Delay

I have recently been delayed by more than 5 hours on a flight from Derry to Liverpool. Have written to ryanair requesting compensation for the delay but have got the standard reply that the delay was all down to unexpected aircraft safety/tecnical issues but they do not give any detailed reason as to what the problem was. My question is this do I now pursue them through the small claims court or let the CAA get involved any advice would be greatly appreciated.
