My son has a item for sale on ebay for £1300. A guy calls him yesterday and said if he transfers cash to my sons bank account and the buyer arranges a courier can he have the item.
The item is advertised as collection only due to size.
Is this a scam ? can the buyer reverse the bank transaction ?
Thanks.
How could that be a scam???
Bank transfer = good."Love you Dave Brooker! x"

I had this once before on Ebay and I declined. I thought it was a scam to get my bank details. Unless they use a proper channel (like PayPal) I won't accept it (it's nice to be covered

This scenario was likely to be a scam ( there would have been no bank transfer) but you serious,y need to review your understanding of seller protection if you think PayPal is safer than a bank transfer :eek:I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Perhaps, but so far I haven't had any problems with PayPal or their security.'I solemnly swear that I am up to no good'0 -
People can do nothing with the details you give them other than deposit money. No PayPal stealing it back for some unknown reason.
It's the reason I offer card payments over the phone a small discount, and why I still accept cheques. Scammers don't use them!!0 -
Seriously, you need to look up the PayPal on collection scam.purpledonkey wrote: »Perhaps, but so far I haven't had any problems with PayPal or their security.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I would not worry about the fact he is from Northern Ireland with regards to him being able to collect it. He can easily hop on a plane or ferry and collect it. Many in mainland UK who have not travelled to NI think it is long way away and very expensive to get there, but people in NI are quite used to going to mainland UK and it is not really all that expensive and do not regard it as a major trip.
However, if I would insist on collection personally as advertised if it was not agreed that you would allow collection by courier before bidding closed.0 -

Normally a NI buyer would not worry me, but this is a classic scam and many people fall for it.
The OP was lucky they came and asked for assistance.
usually it is a motor vehicle of some sort, often going to the Continent and always with either a faked email from the bank saying funds are received but being held, or a sudden buyer problem meaning they have to pay via Western Union or paypal with funds being released once courier has item.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards.
