Have a toshiba laptop which is now 3 1/2 years old.
Very slow and has now starting freezing if left for more than 5 mins.
Tried to do a system restore but it failed.
I am totally untechie so considering trying local repair man.

What is an avarage lifespan for a laptop used every day for a lot of surfing?
Thank you.

Usually 3 years if heavily used

freeing can be caused by fluff or overheating due to fluff, or a duff fan.

this vid disassembles a toshiba in 11 mins. Just take your time and note where the long and short screws go

The hardware should last longer than 3 years.

What's more likely is that the software has developed some bug, and/or that the windows installation is cluttered with odd bits of software you've used over the years. It's probably fixable without you needing a new laptop.

Unfortunately many treat a laptop badly, laptops can last many years, I have working laptops going back over 10+ years.

In what way do people treat laptops badly?

it's mainly corporate users who never had to actually pay for their kit that tend to just throw them in bags or keep the vents/fans covered so they basically start to cook. All sorts of things.

3 yrs is quite a long time in the life of a laptop. Main thing to go is the batteries (the big one and the small coin battery inside)b. These can often be replaced and help to keep it going longer.

Keys and keyboards can often go awry too.

If it's slow? it's probably just amassed a load of rubbish (temp files, all sorts of stuff that just accumulates over time). if you can it might be worth just factory restoring. I don't know if the system restore you referred to was an OS one (restore point) or a factory restore. If just an OS one, try and go for a factory restore (press F8 when you restart and before the windows startup icon).

As I said. 3 yrs is a long time, but, if you look after your kit it should easily last another 3 (and probably then some).

    hope this helps

    Using them
In bed, on the carpet, or on their lap, that is the main cause for laptops (hardware faults), of course a laptop is like a desktop , think about what you click on eg ok I must update my Flash player for security reasons , but they miss "don't add MacAfee's (macrappy) safe search toolbar". Or let's download some other free stuff and don't check
    1) where am I getting it from
    2) do I need this piece of spyware bundled with it
    3) Aaaah this stuff I want actually sends a "do you wan't to allow "nice software" from "dodgy site" to modify your system

Of course everyone that doesn't abuse their Laptop (or desktop) clicks on the OK(or Yes) button, Result they come here and ask how do I deal with my stupidity .....

Yup, that'll be Windows for you. The only piece of software that goes mouldy and disintegrates over time.

I run a Toshiba Equium P300-16T lap top. 5Years old. Used to experience numerous BSOD. In between Xmas & New Year I uninstalled Comode firewall & Avast Anti-Virus and replaced both with the built in Windows firewall and Microsoft Security Essentials. Since then the machine has run fine and is much faster at boot up, like a new machine in fact. I do agree with the previous posters re air circulation etc. So to the OP consider what software is running on start up and go from there.
