Buying into ISAs

I want to start an ISA. Does it have to be a lump sum or can I pay in a monthly sum?

If I can pay a monthly sum, does it have to be the same amount each (e.g. £200) or can the sum vary (e.g. £100 one month, £250 next month, £150 another month)?

depends what kind of ISA and who you get it from. Instant access can generally be added to over the year although may have a minimum opening balance. Fixed rates Cash ISA generally allow deposits only for the first couple of weeks.

S&S ISA can be added to at any point subject to the annual limits but are a completely beast compared to Cash ISAs.

An ISA is just a savings account where the interest is never taxed.

Every bank and BS can decide what sort of savings accounts it wants to offer - passbook, postal, online, instant access, notice, fixed rate, variable rate, introductory bonuses, or whatever. All the same options are available on ISA accounts.

So you need to think how you want access, how quickly, and whether you can tie the money up for a certain period (if at all). then look for the best rates on that type of account.
