Blood stained bedding and dirty hotel room

I'm just wondering where I stand when a hotel room is not up to scratch.
I recently stayed at the Ibis Budget in Leeds and had a number of complaints:
* I am not convinced the bedding had been changed when I arrived. There were several hairs on the sheets and they were very crumpled.
* One of the towels in my room was unusable as it smelt strong of sweat and, again, I seriously wonder whether it had been freshly laundered.
* On the first morning I found my feet were black from the dirt on the floor. I had to go out and buy slippers that day.
* There were blood splatters and other stains on the duvet, which the cleaners must have seen when changing the sheets.
I fully admit I put up with the first three points as I was working long hours and didn't have the time or energy to complain to reception. But I only spotted the blood stains as I was leaving on the last morning (and is the most serious issue). I felt sick to the pit of my stomach.
I complained to reception and the manager has contacted me. He first said I could have 20% off two nights on my next stay. I've rejected this as there is no way I'm staying there again. Now he has offered to refund 50% of my bill (one night's stay - £29).
Is this fair?
Am I being stroppy to think that sleeping in blood stained bedding is not acceptable and I should get a full refund? (it's not a massive amount with it being a budget hotel, I admit). Does a hotel have a duty of care regarding health and safety around these kind of things? I have photos of the stains and room and the room has admitted it was unacceptable.

If you still slept there, I think their second offer is more than acceptable.0

Thanks for your honesty! Is it still acceptable even though I didn't see the blood stains until the morning I checked out after sleeping there two nights?0 -
I think 50% refund is fair.:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

I think that's very subjective - for example I wouldn't be overly bothered (I'd mention it and expect some kind of refund or discount) but my partner would go bat-**** crazy and would probably throw a potted plant at the cleaner. :rotfl:
Based on what you've said, I would be inclined to go for what they've offered. The last thing you want is them stonewalling you if you try to push it further, and retracting their offer. £29 for 2 nights is pretty good if you look at it that way.
By the way, I still agree that it's unacceptable to have blood on a duvet. I'm not on their side with that, it's pretty minging.0 -
Thanks everyone. I'm a fairly pragmatic person and thought I was probably being a bit overly angry. Good to get others' opinions. But, yes, there is no excuse for bloody duvets!
I had planned to stay on an extra night (by booking at the desk) but was so upset that I drove home instead. I'd rather have a six-hour round-trip to work than sleep in yukky bedding.
Now just need to find another decent budget hotel in Leeds as my budget doesn't stretch very far (doing a temp job - first job in six months after being made redundant last year).0 -
I hope you will put it on TripAdvisor - for the sake of other visitors!0

I certainly will! I used to be a travel writer so my main outlet now is TA. I've got quite a good standing on there and some nice pix of blood-stained bedding to highlight the point!
I accept accidents etc happen but the cleaners must have seen the original duvet with blood on and the actual duvet every time they changed the bedding. And filthy floors are horrible! At least I now have some slippers to take with me on my travels.0 -
Fair to my mind, not ideal but a decent retrospective offer seeing as they weren't given a chance to rectify the problems0

I think they should bill you for bleeding on their bedding
It seems a good offer, cant see that you'd get much else from them.0 -
I would not even think of sleep in a bed like that. Did you have an HIV test after?
As we all have good quailty cameras on our mobile phones. I would take a large number of photos and then ask them how much would they be will to pay for me not to send them to the Sun.Do you want your money back, and a bit more, search for 'money claim online' - They don't like it up 'em Captain Mainwaring0
