"Thatcherism" sounds great now; if all you know is boom since 1997 or whatever and don't understand anything "real"

And most of maggie's "supporters" that have been spouting off recently weren't around at the time.

    But I was.

I am neither a maggie lover or hater (and I think my posts reflect this) but what I do know is regardless of what good or bad she did, the fact remains that during her premiership she was utterly despised by a large proportion of the population.

And I'm not convinced that we are any better off now than if she didn't happen.

After Gordon's 13 years of mismanagement. Far far worse.

Recent history is the problem. Not events of 30 years ago.

but the 'large proportion of the population' did not vote her out of power

it's also true that a 'large proportion of the population' despised Scargill and Red Redo and Derek Hatton but on their deaths I doubt many will be demanding a state funeral

Isn't Scargill a capitalist now? Happy for the NUM to pay his Barbican flat rent. Until he lost his court case.

So not the committed Socialist he portrayed all those years ago.

    Likewise every Government since WW2..........

About time we had proportional voting.

Punch and Judy now belong on the sea front not the Houses of Parliament.

    I know.

But I'm just doing my bit to put out the other side of the story.

Like I said the other day on here, it's quite easy to see in 30 years time or whatever when tony blair dies, people who weren't even born when he was around will be saying things like ...

    "he defeated sadam hussein"

    "he defeated global terrorism"

"he presided over the greatest housing boom of all time"

"GDP was fantastic when he was in charge"

    "What a guy"

History is written by the winners.

Most of the time, the winners are the ones with the best PR

True but just because someone wins an election it doesn't mean that a large proportion of the population doesn't despise them.

Only takes a few people to stir up a media storm. Same old faces on the far left.

Lets see how the summer pans out. Return to the 70's I suspect.

A bad hospital, doesn't make a bad health service.

indeed, if you think Mid Staffs is an isolated incident then that would be so.
