I haven't written to them once, I have only today considered it after advice from a colleague who said it worked for him.

If you want to stop the calls send them the email in post #3 in the link above , not number two as I said. They must follow guidelines if they don't complain to the oft

The only contact I have had with them so far is when they have rang me on unknown numbers and I have answered and told them nothing but my name

Can i ask you a question?

Why did you tell a random person your name when you said they are calling you from unknown numbers?

When a person calls me from a "unknown" number asking for personal information they get very short shrift indeed and it usually ends with the word "off" preceded by another which i won't mention on here !

That's why people get ripped off as they are far too willing to give up their personal information far far too easily, just look at facebook !

By the way, did he or she have a " Hi Viz" vest on on the other end of the phone, just asking like !

So how have they got your home number and your mobile number,

If it was a private company, why have you not taken the advice on here about ignoring.

Something is just not quite adding up here.

So How Did They Get Your Phone Numbers..................

Same way Roxburghe get the numbers of anyone who posts about Roxburghe phone calls. There have been lots of threads like this one and most people have not given Roxburghe their number at all.

The OP has done nothing wrong and what they have said does 'add up'. We know (well we have seen it confirmed on other threads) that the DVLA do not give out phone numbers. I think that Roxburghe do some simple searches and checks to try to find some phone numbers for some victims to increase the level of harassment.

I am not sure whether they just get the numbers from searching unusual surnames and finding a number by luck on facebook or whatever, or whether they do a basic financial or land registry search which sometimes shows a phone number for a borrower. None of this is the OP's fault and they are quite right to try to knock this harassment on the head.

@BWFC-AP - see the links on the clicky 'lots of threads' above in my first paragraph, those threads have examples of what to say next time they call. You can also put it in writing and yes, it is against the Protection from Harassment Act and against the OFT debt collector guidelines if a debt collector still contacts you after you have DENIED/DISPUTED the debt, and certainly they should shut up if you expressly state that their continued contact is harassment and you are minded to take them to small claims (someone on pepipoo forums did, twice!).

@BWFC-AP - see you in the play-offs maybe, as long as you don't take BHA's place! :T

What a lot of people do not realise is the power of 192.com !

Fax them your details and get your details taken off the site and do it every year when the new electoral roll comes out.

    Here it is, fill it out and then check a week or two later to see if your details have been removed;

Put your name and even just the town you live in and see what comes up ! You happy with that? I bet you're not. Fill the form out and get it faxed and get your own personal details taken off, i do it every single year.

Save yourself this faff by ticking the box on the electoral register to NOT have your details publicly available.

I tick that box every year but see that my details ARE on 192.com. Are they in breach of some law here?

pdf leaflet "Who has my personal details?"

"The two versions of the electoral register
    Your choice
Every year, between August and October, a voter registration form is delivered to your home.
The full register lists the name and address of everyone who is registered
to vote and is updated every month.
A copy is held at your electoral registration office where anyone can go and look at it. If this leads you to have serious concerns about your safety, please contact your local electoral registration office for advice. Copies of the full register can only be supplied for certain purposes.
If you do not tick the box on the voter registration form, your name and address will also appear on the edited version of the register, which anyone can buy. This means anyone can use your details for any purpose.
By law, you must fill in this form so details of your name and address can be kept up to date on the electoral register.
The person who fills in and signs the registration form for your address must ask each person named on the form if they want their details
    on the edited register.
Until 2002, anyone could buy a copy of the register to use for any purpose. But the law was changed to give you some choice about who can buy details of your name and address.
    Three more things to remember
There are now two versions of the electoral register: the full version and the edited version. When you fill in your form, you can choose to ‘opt out’ of the edited version, which anyone can buy.
    ■ You need to be on the electoral register to be able to vote. You can register if you are a British, Irish, qualifying Commonwealth or European Union citizen.
The main use of the full register is to show who can vote in elections and referendums. Credit reference agencies can use it, but only to check your name and address if you are applying for credit. It can also be used for law enforcement.
    about registering to vote
The edited register is available for general sale and can be used for any purpose. You can choose not to be on the edited register, which is kept separate from the full register. The edited register can be bought by any person, company or organisation and can be used for commercial activities such as marketing."

Debt collectors have various sneaky ways to get numbers. There is nothing suspicious about this.
