Meter falling off the wall

Hi everybody.

We had our meter read earlier today and just went to top it up using our prepayment key.

Opened the meter cupboard door and found the meter, main fuse and isolator switch hanging off the wall !!

It would seem that the meter reader dislodged the board all this gear is screwed onto the wall. There is loads of plaster lying on the floor but no screws, rawlplugs or otherwise lying around which makes me think the meter reader knew what he had done....

Anybody know who I report this to as it's not ideal to have the kit hanging off the wall like this.

I am with Scottish Power if that makes a difference. Postcode is ML11.

Cheers for reading!

Report it urgently. Like right now.
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.
  • Thanks both. I will give SP Energy Networks a call now. Will let you know how we get on.

    Cheers!

And yes, we're just outside Lanark in a wee village!
  • I dont see how you can say a meter reader did anything to make a meter come off the back board, I ve seen loads of dodgy backboards with meters not fixed properly, hanging on for dear life Seeing as how we touch nothing whatsoever on the meter when we read the things, you better think again before coming out with unfounded comments like that. The only thing we do is turn the triangular key and open the door for a few seconds once every six months

    Has the plaster given way...
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

I don't think anyone is claiming that this is common practice for a meter reader, and I doubt all meter readers are saints!

The reader could have held on to it for support and it simply broke.

I don't think it is fair to attack the OP just because you are or were a meter reader.

Well, perhaps the meter reader who came to our house was not quite as diligent and careful as yourself?

Whilst your reply is welcomed I can't figure out how you came to the conclusion the meter had 'come off the back board'. If you take a moment to re-read the post you will see that it was the backboard that had came away from the wall.........

Perhaps you were the person who read the meter, perhaps not. What I find concerning is that the reader (nobody else except the dog & I had access to the cupboard) took it upon himself to remove from the floor the wallplugs and screws in an attempt to 'tidy things up'. Why would a reader do that I ask you? Furthermore why did he not mention such a serious safety risk to myself at the time?

Obviously you don't know the installation as you mention a 'triangular key' do you? Would you perhaps be referring to the plastic key used to open Gas meter boxes like the typeI have OUTSIDE the property and not in the hall where the electricity meter cupboard is located?

Wise up Mr Meter reader and stop making a mockery of this forum and perhaps making yourself look a wee bit foolish as you don't have all the facts to pass judgement.

    Cheers!

Yes, it has. The very nice man from SP Networks has just left after repairing the backboard.

He said the whole assembly was just held up with the incoming cable!

All sorted now, Thanks everyone, well nearly everyone.......

If the nice man from SP networks has said that the board was just held on with the cable and you previously said that the meter reader had removed the wallplugs and screws when he 'tidied thing up', which is it to be? it can't be both.

You were very quick to blame the meter reader without any proof that he had actually done anything to dislodge the backboard when in fact it might have fallen down at any time due to the lack of screws holding it up.

    Read more carefully.

The man clearly meant that it was only held up by the cable after the damage, how would he know what it was like before the damage, unless he had been there previously.
