Admiral EUI LTD Debt Letter

Hi all,
First post so apologies if it is in the wrong place!
So I have recently switched my car insurance. I was with Admiral for 3 years and it ran out on the 8th March. I rang Admiral on the 28th Feb to advise that I won't be renewing with them as they were a 1/3 more expensive then a handful of other insurers.
Guy on the end of the phone did what he could to reduce the price but could not get close to the price quoted by the ther companies. So I said that I did want to renew which he was fine with.
I asked if there were any outstanding payments to be made and he said none at all so I thought nothing of it-premium was paid monthly.
I then got a letter from Admiral stating that there was £87 outstanding on the account and they have sent this to a debt collection agency to recover the debt.
Where do I stand legally? I was told 100% that there were no outstanding payments on the account when I closed it but now they are saying there are?!??
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What has probably happened, is they did not lapse the policy and it automatically renewed. They then cancelled it and charged you for the cover and a fee.
Ring Admiral and find out what happened, they may want you to send in a photocopy of your new cover to show you arranged cover elsewhere0 -
Thanks for the prompt response. I have already asked what has happened and they have confirmed that they did cancel the policy when I requested it.
If there is an outstanding amount on the account do I have to pay it? Bearing in mind that when I cancelled it they assured me there were no payments due on the account?0 -
What reason do they give for you owing them money?0

They said there was still an outstanding payment on the policy. However when I cancelled it I was informed otherwise!
I guess I don't have a leg to stand on but I thought there may be something I could do as they effectively lied to me?0
