Garage issues

Quick question (did a search but can't see this having been discussed before, althougf can't believe that!!)
Garage quotes me a price for a repair and I agree. Come to pay and the price has risen 20%, despite the guy having my quoted price written down on a piece of paper in front of him.
Is that legal??

Is it's a quote and not an estimate and the work undertaken was strictly as per the quote (ie no add-ons or changes) then on the face of it, no they cannot do this.
If you are forced to pay to get your car back, write 'paid under protest' on the invoice before paying and have/try get them to sign it.0 -
That might depend on whether or not it was a "quote" or an "estimate". You might be stuck with an "I said, he said" argument here as to just what the written figure is - quote or estimate.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. Is the 20% the vat?0

Thanks guys - this is part of an ongoing dispute. I am already raging at being asked to pay for £500 of repairs to a 6 week old, £40k+ car so this will all be going into an email into the big boss.0

Why not post a new thread detailing the problems and what's happened to-date, perhaps somebody could help in constructing a complaint of some sort0

Don't business to consumer (B2C) quotes have to show the VAT as well?
I thought it was only business to business (B2B) quotes that don't have to show the VAT charge?0 -

I'm a customer (and a she! ;-)) and it's not the VAT. That's on top of the 20% hike. Quoted £335, charged £480 inc VAT.0
