Freesat and Music

I am more or less housebound and also have trouble sleeping.
Would I find all kinds of different music on Freesat (I don't want
pop) or, would it be easier to just buy a DVD player and the discs
of the kind of music I like? Even on the radio I can't find a programme playing the kind of music I like late at night.
I reaalise this is a weird question but I really would appreciate
your opinions.

You can see the radio channels you'd get, as well as any music tv channels. You could then google what genre they are playing, and see if it's suitable.
Frankly skip the dvd route, just go find the music you want in digital format, throw on a mp3 player, and use with a set of music speakers to give you your own type of music. If you already have cd's, you can rip them into digital format.0 -
When I can't sleep I usually tune in to Radio 4 Extra, there is often a drama on in the early hours. That gum you like is coming back in style.0

If it is convenient to have your pc where you wish to do your listening then you could consider using internet radio.
There are tens of thousands of radio stations out there covering every type of music you could imagine and it's free just so long as you don't exceed your broadband allowance.
Many stations will play at the click of a button while others may require a specific file format to play them. Often, iTunes software will suffice for this and it is easily downloadable onto a pc.
I suggest you start by Googling 'internet radio stations' and take it from there.
Hope this helps (and No, it isn't a weird question)0 -
also using the PC try using WE7 http://www.we7.com/ it is a music station that plays what you want hear, you type in an artist say Frank Sinatra and it will play a song by him, then if you wish it will play someone similar say Tony Bennett.
you can also do it by genre, country music, blues, swing, rock etc.
hope this helps
edit: forgot to say there are some adverts now and again0 -
If you want Internet radio, a cheapo smartphone and an app like tune in radio could be the answer (on a wifi connection)0

What kind of music do you like?
The other Saturday morning on the radio, quite by accident, I heard Andrea Bocelli's wonderful voice and then a brilliant classical guitarist but I also like Elvis and I managed to watch an hour of Glen Cambell
(the Rhinestone Cowboy) late one night. Beautiful female voices move me to tears e.g. Jennifer Rush,Whitney Houston, Eva Cassidy, etc.
So, you will see how varied my taste in music is. I believe that listening to music like the above is relaxing and will help me to sleep.
I'm so pleased with the responses I got and will have a go at using the Internet to put a selection together. Thank you all!!0 -
Be careful if you do use a tv or pc with monitor on to listen to music as you may end up with the image burnt into the screen if it has displayed the same image for a good length of time.
If you can't be bothered with the hassle of setting up songs via the Internet all the time A digital radio might be another possibility to listen to a lot more stations and not have to download anything.
I'd suggest looking at Gold fm, Smooth radio and magic 999 if you haven't already, there on digital radio and the Internet.
Bbc website/I player will also have previously recorded stuff you might want to look at for some of the recorded sessions etc.0 -

You may like to take a look at Last FM which is an internet site providing free music tailored to your own tastes.
You just set up a profile (so that it knows who you are for storing your listening tastes) then type in the artists you like, or genre of music etc and it plays a selection of music based on those parameters. This way, you will discover many artists that you have never heard of but are very good all the same.

What you can't do is play an entire album of, say, Whitney Houston as that's not the point of the site. If you want to do that then you would have to look to something like Spotify or Napster etc which have a small monthly subscription (but with free trials to allow you to find out what they offer).
As I said before, there is a vast amount of music out there, it's just a case of finding it.0
