countersigning passport application

sorry if this is a stupid question :(
if your south african but lived here over ten yrs would u have a british passport? i only have one person who could sign my passport application and hes south african. panicking now :( thanks

    surely you need to ask this person if they have a brit passport.

    it doesnt naturally follow that because hes lived here for 10 years he has one.

    I met a woman at work who had lived here since the 70's and still had a U.S passport

    He would have needed to apply for a British passport I'd have thought. My OH has been living in the UK legally for the last 10 years, he doesn't have a British passport.

    lots of people can countersign, even a shop owner if they are vat registered, there has been threads on here giving ideas of people who can countersign,
    hope your friend can sign it for you,but if not have a look through the forums

    The shop owner would need to know you personally.:D

    well obviously they have to know you, hopefully anyone countersigning will read the notes that accompany the forms

    because i was at school 25years ago and live nowhere near it. my gp wont do it. i thought about the pharmacist but form says they need a passport and they dont have one

    Do you have any friends who own their own businesses? Your boss?

    It's unlikely the SA friend will have a UK passport TBH, just from living here for 10 years, that wouldn't qualify them for one unless they have been naturalised or have a British parent, but you never know, you may be lucky.
