Bute found in Asda Smart Price Corned Beef

People can choose to eat all the horse meat they want, the problem with the sm's is they havent been telling us what the meat is to make that choice!I've (knowingly) eaten horse in France and found it to be absolutely delicious. It's like beef, but milder and sweet. I've a lady friend who has a second home in France and she tells me that it's openly on sale in butchers and supermarkets. I'm tempted to ask her to get me a pack of mince and couple of steaks.
However, the French aren't the world leaders in horse consumption. The Chinese eat the most by far and Italy is the European champion. In fact, some say that a truly authentic Bolognese sauce should be made with horse.

PS. I would probably be at greater risk driving to my local ASDA to return my tin.0 -
The issue here, as it was before, is not the fact that it's got horse meat in, but that the meat shouldn't have entered the food chain at all. Horse meat with bute in is classed as "not fit for human consumption". Somebody, somewhere, is making money by substituting horse meat for beef. This is illegal and a danger to health.
Today, horse meat with drugs in, tomorrow, what else?
However, the blase attitude shown by a lot of people shows that they don't care what !!!!!! they put into their bodies, and that's fine, but there are a lot of people who do care and the rules are supposed to be there to protect them.0 -

I never thought that I'd see myself defending them, but the supermarkets didn't know. They test to protect us from this sort of thing and then you blame them out of hand. It's their supplier's supplier's ... supplier's supplier who's to blame.
Of course, the horse DNA, plastic, "bute" or whatever shouldn't be in there.
But, with our ever-increasing ability to measure very small things, I wonder how long will it be before we see a headline like, "Molecule of ... found in ..."
I also wonder what you could find in an "organic" product, if you wanted to and then looked hard enough. If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5?

the long and short of it is that the price will be going up and us not the maker/distributor/seller will take the extra costings.0

It's not that I don't care what I eat, its that I hate seeing food waste and don't have the option to boycott cheap food as I'm not in a financial position to do so.
It does annoy me when food is thrown out 'just incase' as there are many starving people in the UK who would benefit from that food despite 'what it does' to their bodies.0 -
I hate food waste too, but it doesn't have to be wasted, it can go into pet food.
I understand that a lot of people buy cheap meat because they have little money. The rules are in place to protect them, but there are unscrupulous people making money whilst playing Russion Roulette with your health.0 -

exactly my view. :T Thanks for writing so eloquently about something that is really making me angry, which is saying a lot as I'm usually quite relaxed about these sorts of public outcry.0 -
You don't need a receipt it will just be put on a giftcard no problem
I wasn't asked for a receipt (and neither was the bloke in front of me. There were already quite a few tins of the stuff starting to stack up in a basket behind the customer services desk - it was obviously more popular than I thought). The shop assistant just took our tins and refunded us in cash.Freddie Starr Ate My Signature

As one of you people you are digging out I'll just point out to you that I don't buy corned beef and would never in a million years buy smartprice stuff out of somewhere like Asda. I'm not blase about anything, I'm just not going to join the mass hysteria because the amounts found are not a danger to health and it is irresponsible of you to say it is. It's obviously not desirable to ingest it in any quantity and it is right the product is withdrawn. The problem has been identifed, it's being rectified and proves the protective measures are in force. That is the important point and should not be hijacked by people using it as a platform to make sanctimonious comments about other people.0
