Bute found in Asda Smart Price Corned Beef

It's breaking news on the BBC website. People are asked to return any tins.

I have a tin in the cupboard.

Apparently, it's only 4 parts per million and you'd have to eat 600 horsemeat burgers a day to get the safe human daily dose of the stuff.

So, personally, corned beef hash is on the menu tomorrow night. At my age, I need all the pain killers and anti-inflammatories I can get.
If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5? :)

Great i stocked up when this was cheap-not impressed but at least we haven't eaten much of it.

edit-already eaten it all so that's just great-thanks asda for drugging my kids. Just as well I've stopped buying anything processed now.

If it's such tiny doses you'd most probably be breathing in the same level of harmful substance walking down any high street.

Finding bute in corned beef when it shouldn't be there is pretty alarming IMO. It's all very well saying it's only X ppm nothing to be worried about, but what about other medications given to animals, some of those could be toxic if they accumulate in the body.

When OH was on tools we used to shop at ASDA all the time and I bought this corned beef for his packed lunches and he would probably eat at least one can a fortnight or more.

Several people have made openly insulting remarks about me eating organic, but when stuff like this happens, I'm just really happy that OH hasn't eaten corned beef in over a year now. That's not smugness, that's sheer relief.

Apparently ASDA have also withdrawn another brand of corned beef, which has been tested and found to contain no "bute" whatsoever, but is made in the same factory.

Where do you draw the line? All other foods are made on the same planet.

It's the food waste aspect of this that I have an issue with.

I don't use Asda very much as I find it depressingly downmarket and it's a pain to park in my nearest branch.

I do occasionally wander round though and am glad my whiskers twitched worryingly when I first spotted this stuff some months ago. It had on the can 'made in France'. 'Made in France,' I thought. 'Surely corned beef is almost all from South America where the cattle are, more or less, free range?'

Something told me to leave it well alone. I'm glad I did.

It would be nice to think heads would roll as a result of this scandal - if only pour encourager les autres but I don't suppose they will.

I know I'm being thick, but does this mean they've found horse in this product ?

You're not being thick at all! The Food (complete lack of) Standards Agency were less clear than in their statement. But, according to the BBC:

"The Asda product was tested as part of an industry-wide programme and found to be positive for horse DNA above 1%."

We eat this in corned beef hash every two or three weeks and I've got a tin of it in the cupboard now, but I don't have the receipt for it any more so it will probably go in the bin unless my neighbour's cat wants it. We'll eat pretty much owt here, but there's a limit to the appeal of that stuff even before you know it's been fortified with added horse and vetinary drugs.
