How do you transfer s3 galaxy photos to a pc? (I have the wire) it detects the drive (s3) but shows no photos.

or is software required?

Are you sure that you are looking in the correct place (folder)? Can you see other files?

Try using airdroid off play store, i have a s3 and transfer most things using airdroid now.

It should work without any software. Check screen after connecting USB cable, it should ask you what mode you prefer.
One is USB storage which should pop up as normal memory stick.
Other is media sync which should let you import images like from digital camera. First mode is easier, I think
Somebody could tick "Do not ask again" before, so you may need to go to settings and make it ask you again. Or choose USB storage as default USB mode.
