Then you are pressing it at the wrong time.
Remove all floppy disks, CDs, and DVDs from your computer, and then restart your computer.
Click the Start button , click the arrow next to the Shut Down button , and then click Restart.

    Do one of the following:

If your computer has a single operating system installed, press and hold the F8 key as your computer restarts. You need to press F8 before the Windows logo appears. If the Windows logo appears, you'll need to try again by waiting until the Windows logon prompt appears, and then shutting down and restarting your computer.

If your computer has more than one operating system, use the arrow keys to highlight the operating system you want to start in safe mode, and then press F8.

On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight the safe mode option you want, and then press Enter. For more information about options, see Advanced startup options (including safe mode).

Log on to your computer with a user account that has administrator rights.

To clarify, does it boot all the way to the Windows desktop before it fails? When if fails, do you get a blue screen with an error code? If so, what is that code?
And what is your operating system? XP, Vista, Windows 7?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

It's windows7, ok this is what happens: when I switch on the comp, it's says the following: American megastar ends, cache l2, size: 1024 kb, memory type : ddr2-667, dual channel mode.

    Press del to set up
    Press f12 for bbs popup
    Initialising USB controllers....done.
    4061mb ok
    USB devise (s) 1 keyboard, 1 mouse
Auto-detecting ahci port 0........IDE hard disk
    Auto-detecting achi port 1........atapi cdrom
    Sata port0 st31000528as cc44
    S.m.a.r.t. Capable and status bad
    Santa port 1 hl-dt-stdvdram gt30n 1.01
    Auto-dectecting USB mass storage devices....
00usb mass storage devices found and configured..
    Achi port0 device error
    Press f1 to resume.

When I press f1 this is what happens.

    Window error recovery
After so many second it's says starting windows then its says welcome, windows 7 home edition then the computer is on as normal in that I go use it without any problem until for minutes and then it say press del set or f12 and then goes straight onto saying reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press any key and it stops there.

That means your drive is on the way out or is out. It's clear that you didn't follow the instruction to make your Recovery Discs when you first got the PC. So your job after replacement of the hard drive will be that little bit harder.
Not sure how easy it is to replace the hard drives in those things anyway.

Follow my instruction for a temporary repair to see if you can make recovery discs and back up any important data.

I am logging on with safe mode, then window help and support automatic comes on, under what is safe mode has advanced set option (including safe Mode), start your comp in safe mode, diagnostic tools to use in safe mode, troubleshooting problems while in safe mode, which drivers get loaded in safe mode

You didn't need to choose Safe Mode, but you can use Safe Mode to copy off your important data.
    Off to the cinema.
