Banks are the easy one - I walked straight in with my marriage certificate and bank card and they scanned it and it was changed on all my paperwork within a couple of weeks. Passport was straight forward to. Haven't gotten around to all the different bills yet but must get it finished off....

Don't forget your doctor's surgey - that was easy too - just a form to fill and take your certificate.

Sorry - I hadn't actually read the links - assumed that as they were the government ones they'd be right. Did a quick google and shared the results, hoping to stop the OP from paying a company to do it for her.
I have no experience of double-barrelling my name so assumed the government's information website to be correct.
I didn't realise the passport bit said it must be changed. You're right it doesn't. As long as you book all holidays in the name on your passport you are okay to fly etc.

Edit to say - this is correct though. As you say claire - you just fill the form in and send it off.

    Yeah that website is awful!

Swampy why not just use your driving licence? When I pay for things with a card in the USA on holiday & they ask for ID I use that, you don't want to carry around a passport all the time incase it got lost/stolen.

It is actually easier if you don't bother changing your name btw. It's not compulsory!

I want to change it but I'm not sure whether to do it straight away...I'm due to take my driving test next month & if I change my name now I'll have to get another provisional licence made (which may end up being pointless if I pass).
And I'm not sure about the passport thing...I mean if I just leave that one as it is, would I get in trouble?

You don't give up your maiden name when you get married - it's still your name if you want to use it.

A lot of women use their married name for family stuff but keep their maiden name for dealings with work. If you've worked hard to get a good reputation in your chosen career, it can be useful to keep working under the name that people will recognise.

If you're taking your test next month then perhaps there will be an option to amend your name on your proper licence, ask your instructor or find out at the test centre.

No you can't get in trouble passport wise. No one would know you had changed your name anyway. Plus you are allowed to use two names as long as its not for fraudulent reasons. I've had mine in my maiden name for almost 2 years. You are even allowed to apply for passports with a note as to what your maiden name is incase you use it for professional purposes & travel might be booked in it for work etc

It is one big pain in the bum!!
I'm still working my way through the list now, seven months on!
The first ones I did was the mortgage, council tax and house insurance.
We opened up a new bank account for me so that was straight forward!
I've only just sent off my driving licence.. Needed it for some tests I did, and also my car insurance charged about £50 to change a detail, so I waited until it ran out, cancelled it and went elsewhere. Driving licence doesn't cost unless you change your photo too. You have to send the original certificate tho which I hate doing!!
Passport doesn't need to be changed, providing you book holidays in the name on your passport. You have to pay for a new one which is nearly £80 so won't be doing that lol.
Most places just need a letter with a copy of the certificate so it's quite straight forward.
Married my wonderful husband on 8/9/12 :j

There is. If you pass, you need to keep hold of your licence to send off yourself rather than giving it to the examiner to send off, then there are instructions on the back of the test pass certificate on what to do. You'll need to get a form from the Post Office to fill in and send off with the licence and certificate, but it tells you all this. As any changes to your licence normally take up to three weeks I wouldn't send the licence off to be changed now if your test is next month, in case it's not back in time.

I've seen all this recently because OH just passed his test - I'm so proud of him :)

If I change my name on my National Insurance, do I need to change the name on my provisional licence?

I suggest you follow the advice posted above by Cup of chai.

What has NI got to do with your provisional?
