Hi,
I just got married and I was wondering how to go about getting my name changed?
And does anyone know if I would need to change my passport & provisional driving licence as well? Thanks.

Hi Rumana,
Firstly congratulations!
With regards to name change, provided it is just changing to your husband's surname it's pretty simple. You just need to update everyone to say you're married, you're changing your name and in some cases provide the marriage certificate to prove it. It's pretty time consuming (and you'll always miss one!) but easy to do. Just make a list of all your banks, insurance etc etc and work your way through.
You will also need to update your passport and provisional, and I believe these two you need to pay for. However, if you're changing everything else you will need to update these too as they'll no longer be in your correct name.
If you're changing to a double barrel or something different I'm not sure how it works I'm afraid!!
Hope this helps
Thank you to all the compers!0 -
Thanks for the reply...do you know where I need to send my marriage certificate to get my name changed? There seems to be various websites that offer ways to change your name...0

no - don't use websites! contact your bank directly and inform them you have married. same with Drivers licence and Passport. the rest are not important. unless you are on benefits which means you MUST tell them immediately.0

Then it's just a case of phoning all the companies you have dealings with (tv licence, gas electric, bank accounts etc) and find out how to change your name with them. Some will have a form for you to complete. Some will just require a letter. Most will ask for an official copy of your marriage certificate.0 -
You will need a deed poll if you get married and want to double-barrel your surname.

That is incorrect. That website is wrong what a load of nonsense. Bad considering its a .gov one although its not the first!
It's easy to change your name whether its double barrelled is irrelevant.
There is a form you can fill out to change it on your driving license, you send it with a copy of your marriage certificate.
Passport same thing - but you don't need to change this until it runs out otherwise you will pay the cost for an entire new one- just book holidays in your maiden name.
I took my certificate into my bank & they changed my name there and then. Some credit card companies requested a photocopy of the certificate, others Ive done over the phone.
You do not need to use any company or pay anyone!0 -

Spot on. I certainly never had to get a deed poll or pay anyone to change my name and like claire says I kept my passport in my maiden name and booked holidays using that name until it was time for renewal and I never had a problem.
Someone I know has done the same recently - the only time it has been a problem was at a hotel in spain when she had booked the room using a credit card in her married name but then had to give them her passport in her maiden name - the hotel receptionist didn't like that the names didn't match but accepted it after a bit of an explanation.Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!0 -

Sorry - I hadn't actually read the links - assumed that as they were the government ones they'd be right. Did a quick google and shared the results, hoping to stop the OP from paying a company to do it for her.
I have no experience of double-barrelling my name so assumed the government's information website to be correct.
I didn't realise the passport bit said it must be changed. You're right it doesn't. As long as you book all holidays in the name on your passport you are okay to fly etc.

Edit to say - this is correct though. As you say claire - you just fill the form in and send it off.0 -
There is no central place to change your name sadly. Its a long administrative process. Some places will change it just because you ask, others will want original or copies of the certificate. Its work getting a copy scanned so you can email it.
The wedding certificate itself is a legal document to allow you to change your name. No need for a deed poll unless it is a name not listed on the marriage certificate. Ie some kind of mix of names. If you use you married name, or a double barrel (any way around) then you don't need a deed poll change.
Good luck! I just found another one I missed today... The land registry.0 -
As another poster has said it's just a long administrative job - I got married last August and I'm still changing stuff even now. There has even been stuff set up by my husband when we were living together that needs changing (the problem is getting my OH to do it - so I know it's been done!!)
I have now realised that having changed all my bank cards and credit cards etc. That if we go on holiday - my passport is still in my maiden name - no problem there!! But it is - if I need ID for monetary transactions abroad  so that will be another one to sort.
Also had the same problem with re-mortgaging - you have to change all the names etc before you can apply for a remortgage.
One thing I did find out that was legally it is down to me to inform HMRC of any changes in status, home address etc. It is not down to my employer but it is easy enough to do online.
SwampyExpect the worst, hope for the best, and take what comes!!:o0
